WhatsApp Tests Real-Time Presence Indicators on iOS Amid Privacy Safeguards
New beta feature introduces visual cues for user availability.
WhatsApp has extended testing of a new visual presence indicator to its iOS platform, signaling a shift toward more immediate “at-a-glance” availability tracking within the Meta-owned ecosystem. According to data from WABetaInfo, the latest beta version 26.26.10.72 for iPhone introduces a small green dot on contact profile photos to signify when a user is actively online.
The indicator, which mirrors a feature recently introduced to the Android beta channel, appears specifically within the “Contact Info” screen. Unlike traditional status lines that require reading text, this real-time visual cue is designed to appear the moment a contact connects and vanish upon their exit.
This move toward heightened presence awareness reflects a broader industry trend where messaging platforms seek to reduce friction in communication by broadcasting user availability. However, such features often invite scrutiny regarding digital boundaries. The Information Commissioner’s Office has previously highlighted the importance of “privacy by design,” ensuring that new features do not inadvertently expose user habits without consent.
WhatsApp’s implementation remains tethered to existing privacy protocols. The green dot will not override a user’s choice to hide their “Last Seen” or “Online” status. If a user has restricted these visibility settings in their account preferences, the presence indicator remains disabled for both the user and their contacts.
While the feature is currently confined to the “Contact Info” page, its absence from the main chat list suggests a cautious rollout. Analysts at WABetaInfo noted that the utility of the indicator would be significantly higher if integrated into the primary conversation view, though such a move would increase the visibility of user activity across the app.
The test is currently limited to a subset of beta participants on both iOS and Android. No timeline has been established for a general public release.
