Toyota Reworks Smallest Crossover Floorpan to Squeeze in Yaris Hybrid System
Chassis modifications and a split battery layout allow the Toyota Aygo X to slash sprint times by nearly six seconds
Toyota has re-engineered its smallest European crossover, fitting the Toyota Aygo X with the standard full-hybrid system previously reserved for the larger Yaris hatch. The mechanical overhaul required structural alterations to the vehicle’s architecture and front-end packaging.
To fit the larger mechanical components, Toyota’s European development team expanded the front nose section. The enlarged engine bay now houses a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine paired with an electric motor and a continuously variable transmission, all mounted on a shortened GA-B platform, while the battery was split into two banks beneath the rear seat cushions to preserve fuel-tank space.
Packaging the electrical storage system required a complete redesign of the floorpan. Rather than placing the energy storage unit in a single casing under the rear seat as in the Yaris, engineers divided the 0.76kWh unit across the two banks.
Official data indicates the hybrid setup reduces the zero-to-62 mph acceleration time by 5.7 seconds compared to the outgoing 1.0-liter model, bringing the overall sprint time below the 10-second mark. The revised powertrain dramatically alters the dynamic performance metrics of the city car.
Comparative road tests against competitors like the Citroen C3 show marked improvements in low-speed urban acceleration and steering agility. However, technical evaluation records note that engine harshness remains noticeable during heavy acceleration, while skinny tyres limit maximum cornering grip at higher speeds.
