Anthropic Explores Custom Silicon Strategy in Potential Partnership with Samsung
The Claude creator enters preliminary talks with Samsung for 2nm chip manufacturing.
Anthropic is evaluating the development of its own artificial intelligence chips, marking a significant shift toward vertical integration for the creator of the Claude chatbot. The company has entered preliminary discussions with Samsung as a potential manufacturing partner, according to reports from The Information. While the project remains in an early exploratory phase, the move signals a broader industry trend where software-centric AI firms seek to mitigate their reliance on external hardware providers.
Samsung is reportedly pitching its 2-nanometer fabrication process and advanced packaging facilities to secure the contract. This potential collaboration follows Samsung’s participation in a $65 billion funding round for Anthropic alongside other industry players. The South Korean conglomerate is currently vying to capture market share from the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), which currently dominates the production of high-end AI processors. To bolster its competitive edge, the South Korean government and private sector, led by Samsung Group and SK Group, recently announced a combined investment of $518 billion to establish a massive semiconductor mega cluster in the country.
Anthropic’s intent to build internal hardware expertise is underscored by the recent recruitment of Clive Chan. An engineer who previously served on the original team designing OpenAI’s custom silicon, Chan joined Anthropic just weeks ago. His hiring suggests a move to accelerate development as competitors like OpenAI advance their own hardware initiatives, including the recently disclosed Jalapeño chip project.
Despite these internal ambitions, Anthropic maintains that its existing partnerships with Amazon, Google, and Nvidia remain foundational to its infrastructure strategy. The company is also reportedly considering the use of chips from Microsoft and the British startup Fractile to diversify its hardware supply chain. This multi-vendor approach reflects a growing necessity among AI developers to secure compute resources amid global supply constraints.
Industry analysts note that Samsung’s ability to successfully manufacture these chips will depend on its capacity to scale the 2nm node, a technical threshold where it has historically struggled to match TSMC’s yields. Beyond Anthropic, Samsung is also positioned as a potential manufacturer for a portion of Google’s future Tensor processors, as it attempts to establish itself as a primary foundry for the next generation of generative AI hardware.
