Anthropic Decouples AI Agents from the Desktop to Enable Asynchronous Workflows

AI agents move beyond the desktop to support persistent background tasks.

Anthropic is shifting the operational model of its Claude Cowork tool, moving away from a laptop-dependent architecture toward a persistent, cloud-based agent system. The company announced that Cowork is now available via mobile applications and web browsers, allowing tasks to continue executing even after a user disconnects their primary device.

This transition addresses a fundamental bottleneck in current generative AI workflows: the requirement for an active session. Previously, Cowork was tethered to the Claude desktop application, meaning processes halted when the computer was shut down. Under the new framework, the AI agent maintains continuity across iPhone, Android, and iPad devices, managing files and connected tools asynchronously.

According to data released by Anthropic, the move is a response to how users are actually deploying these tools. The company reports that over 90% of tasks delegated to Cowork are unrelated to software development. Instead, roughly half of all usage is concentrated in business operations and content creation, such as reconciling quarterly expenses or generating reports from call transcriptions.

This shift reflects a broader industry trend toward agentic AI, where models transition from reactive chat interfaces to proactive entities capable of multi-step execution. Organizations like the National Institute of Standards and Technology have begun examining the implications of such autonomous systems as they become more integrated into professional environments.

The system is designed to pause and issue mobile notifications when it encounters a decision requiring human intervention. While the expansion to web and mobile increases flexibility, Anthropic confirmed that the desktop client remains the only version capable of accessing local files and the user’s browser.

The mobile and web versions are currently launching in beta for subscribers of the Max plan, with a wider rollout to other paid tiers expected to follow. To support the launch, the company is doubling usage limits for Cowork through August 5 and has unified the interface to merge chat and agent functions into a single workspace.
