Manchester United Re-Enter Race for Bologna Defender Jhon Lucumi in £24 Million Transfer Battle

Manchester United has re-entered the pursuit of Bologna centre-back Jhon Lucumi, setting up a potential Premier League transfer battle with Chelsea for the Colombia international, according to Italian outlet Quotidiano Sport.

Bologna is holding out for an overall package of £24 million, comprising £21.4 million upfront and £2.6 million in performance-related add-ons. The Serie A side recently rejected a £15.4 million opening bid including add-ons from Juventus, while Lucumi previously turned down an opportunity to join Como as he enters the final year of his contract.

United’s renewed interest comes as the club seeks cover on the left side of central defence. First-choice left-footed defender Lisandro Martinez suffered an injury setback while representing Argentina against Spain last month. Although Martinez is expected to return to training before the Premier League season begins, his history of physical issues leaves United cautious about relying solely on young prospect Ayden Heaven.

Lucumi established his reputation during Bologna’s 2023/24 campaign, forming a core defensive partnership with Riccardo Calafiori to help the club finish fifth in Serie A and secure Champions League qualification. Calafiori subsequently departed for Arsenal, and Lucumi is now poised to follow him out of the club before his contract expires next summer.

The 28-year-old completed 90% of his passes and won nearly 60% of his duels in Serie A last season, averaging more than four recoveries and 1.5 tackles per match. Chelsea remains attentive to Lucumi’s availability, though the Blues recently reinforced their backline by signing French central defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace, giving United a potential edge in offering regular playing time.
