Indie Horror Title VILE: Exhumed Gets Limited Physical CD-ROM Release After Steam Ban

Independent studio Final Girl Games is rolling out a limited physical CD-ROM run for its psychological horror title VILE: Exhumed, directing half of all sales to charitable emergency housing following the game’s high-profile removal from Valve Corp.’s Steam storefront.
The physical edition, produced alongside horror publisher DreadXP, is restricted to a batch of 100 individually numbered units priced at $9.99. The package includes an archival-quality CD-ROM, a classic jewel case, an eight-page booklet, and hand-written labels. The physical release accompanies an ongoing digital distribution model on a pay-what-you-want basis, with net revenues split equally between the developer and the Red Door Family Shelter, a Canadian non-profit providing emergency housing and shelter support.
The release follows the game’s removal from Steam last year, where it became a central reference point in debates over digital storefront moderation, developer autonomy, and financial censorship. Framed as a found-footage simulation of an old computer system, VILE: Exhumed tackles themes of misogyny, personal trauma, and entitlement through interactive horror mechanics.
The game was developed part-time over six months to a year by a solo creator operating under the moniker Final Girl Games. To ground the project’s grotesque imagery, the developer personally performed every on-screen female character and created all practical gore special effects by hand before photographing them for inclusion in the game.
“Getting to make a physical edition of the game felt like getting a second chance at a release for VILE: Exhumed,” the developer stated, highlighting the importance of publisher support from DreadXP for games addressing challenging subject matter without creative restrictions.
