Atletico Stance Against Barca Clears Path for Arsenal in €115M Alvarez Chase

Atletico Madrid’s firm refusal to sell forward Julian Alvarez to La Liga rivals has severely constrained Barcelona’s pursuit of the Argentine, opening a direct window for Arsenal to secure the player in a potential transaction expected to top €115 million ($132.7 million).

Barcelona sporting director Deco and executive Joao Amaral traveled to Madrid for talks with Alvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, as the Catalan side prepares an improved offer of roughly €115 million (£98.6 million), following an unsuccessful initial attempt worth near €100 million. However, Atletico Madrid Chief Executive Miguel Angel Gil remains strongly opposed to any transaction, citing increasingly strained relations between the two clubs and an official stance against strengthening direct domestic rivals Barcelona or Real Madrid.

In contrast to the stalemate facing Barcelona, Atletico executives have maintained open communication channels with non-Spanish clubs, including Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain. Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta has utilized his extensive executive background and deep ties at Atletico to keep the Premier League club prominently positioned, with internal indications that Alvarez would consider a move to London should his tenure in Spain end.

Alvarez originally joined Atletico Madrid in August 2024 from Manchester City in a high-profile transfer valued at up to €95 million. Despite his long-term commitment in Spain, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta remains keen on acquiring the 25-year-old World Cup winner to bolster his attack ahead of the upcoming campaign, viewing him as a priority market target.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has set an internal deadline of August 10 to resolve the situation, coinciding with Alvarez’s scheduled return date for Atletico’s pre-season preparations. Should Barcelona fail to reach an agreement before that cutoff or if the player seeks an exit, Arsenal are prepared to launch a formal bid structured to meet Atletico’s requirements.
