Anbernic Sets August 5 Launch for $65 RG SP Clamshell Handheld
The retro hardware maker announces pre-order availability, memory tiers, and specs for its Game Boy Advance SP-inspired device.
Anbernic will officially open pre-orders for its RG SP retro clamshell handheld on August 5 at 6:00 a.m. ET (3:00 a.m. PT), pricing the entry-level model at $65 with early bird pricing offering a $7 launch discount.
The $65 base cost positions the handheld significantly lower than Nintendo‘s original Game Boy Advance SP, which debuted in March 2003 at an MSRP of $99.99. During the first three days of availability, Anbernic’s promotional discount lowers the initial purchase price to $58.
The RG SP represents the company’s third clamshell design modeled after the GBA SP, following the RG 35XXSP and RG 34XXSP. For this release, Anbernic opted for a 3.4-inch display matching the classic aspect ratio of the original Nintendo hardware, while removing the analog thumbsticks that were featured on the RG 34XXSP in favor of a traditional layout.
Under the hood, the device runs on an Allwinner H700 quad-core processor paired with a Mali-G31 MP2 GPU, delivering sufficient processing power to emulate retro consoles up to PlayStation Portable (PSP) titles. Power is supplied by a 3,300 mAh battery rated to deliver up to six hours of continuous gameplay on a single charge.
Anbernic is offering the RG SP in three storage tiers. Beyond the $65 base configuration, a model bundled with a 64GB memory card costs $80, while a 128GB version is priced at $95. The early bird $7 discount applies across all three tiers during the initial three-day launch window, bringing the respective prices to $58, $73, and $88.
