Seven Dead as Drone Blast Hits Crowded Russian Black Sea Resort Beach
Kyiv blames Russian air defenses for intercepting a drone over beachgoers near Gelendzhik, while Moscow calls the deadly incident a targeted attack.
Seven people, including four children, were killed Monday when a fiery blast struck a crowded resort beach in the Russian Black Sea village of Arkhipo-Osipovka, triggering competing claims between Moscow and Kyiv over long-range drone strikes reaching civilian vacation spots.
Screaming sunbathers scrambled for safety as an airborne object swerved sharply toward the sand moments after gunfire echoed across the water, according to video footage captured near Gelendzhik. Dozens of people were injured when the impact triggered a massive fireball along the shoreline.
Ukrainian Defense Forces officer Andriy Kovalenko disputed Russian claims of a deliberate assault on civilians, asserting that Russian anti-aircraft fire intercepted the incoming drone directly above the crowd. “Russian air defense shot down a drone over people lying on the beach,” Kovalenko stated on Telegram, noting that Ukrainian military operations are calibrated against military-industrial targets to undermine Moscow’s war capacity.
Regional Governor Veniamin Kondratyev denounced the strike as a “targeted attack by the Kyiv regime against civilians,” though he acknowledged in preliminary updates that several casualties resulted from falling drone debris. Russia’s diplomatic mission in Geneva similarly labeled the explosion a cynical act targeting civilian infrastructure.
The strike highlights the expanding vulnerability of holiday enclaves in Krasnodar Krai, where domestic tourism continues despite frequent long-range aerial incursions. Kovalenko contended that Russian President Vladimir Putin has constructed a false sense of security across domestic resort regions by underreporting defense risks, limiting public warnings, and positioning surface-to-air missile units near populated beaches.
Emergency teams worked to clear the crash site as plumes of smoke drifted over the coast. Placing blame on the Kremlin for launching the broader war, Kovalenko added, “It was Putin, his air defense, who killed these Russians. His decisions in response to their decisions launched a chain of death for Russians.”
