The longstanding economic model of home gaming consoles—where manufacturing costs diminish over a product lifecycle, leading to periodic price cuts—has effectively broken down. European buyers visiting the store after August 1 encountered substantial price jumps across Microsoft‘s entire current-generation hardware ecosystem.
While Microsoft previously signaled a $100 to $150 increase for the United States market back in June, the actual adjustments landing in Europe and the United Kingdom are noticeably harsher. In the European Union, buyers face price tags elevated by €150 to €200 depending on the SKU. Across the English Channel, UK consumers must spend £130 to £170 more across the line.
The updated pricing tier reorganizes the baseline entry point for home console gaming in European territories:

- Xbox Series S (1TB): €599.99 / £519.99
- Xbox Series X Digital (no disc drive): €749.99 / £619.99
- Xbox Series X: €799.99 / £669.99
Under this new structure, an entry-level 512GB Xbox Series S in the European Union now commands €499.99, which converts to roughly $575 USD—a stark departure from the budget-friendly positioning the console held at launch.
At the core of these unprecedented mid-cycle price adjustments is an acute crisis in component manufacturing, specifically surrounding DRAM memory and NAND flash storage silicon. Modern consoles like the Xbox Series X rely on a high-speed unified memory system pairing an AMD Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU with 16GB of GDDR6 memory. The Xbox Series S utilizes a trimmed 10GB GDDR6 layout paired with custom NVMe SSD storage built around Microsoft’s Velocity Architecture.
According to disclosures in Microsoft’s June technical updates, storage and memory procurement costs are projected to double once again.
