Samsung Debuts Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra with Major Camera Upgrades and Premium Price Tag
The tech giant expands its foldable lineup with a high-end Ultra model featuring a 200MP camera and enhanced battery life.
Samsung has officially expanded its foldable portfolio with the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, a high-spec flagship that introduces the “Ultra” branding to the company’s folding lineup for the first time. The new device arrives with a significant hardware overhaul, including a 200-megapixel primary camera and a larger battery, though it carries a steeper entry price of $2,100—a $100 increase over its predecessor.
The strategic shift to an Ultra model mirrors Samsung’s approach with its Galaxy S-series, where the highest-tier devices receive exclusive camera and performance enhancements. Alongside the Ultra, Samsung is introducing a standard Galaxy Z Fold 8, which features a wider, shorter form factor compared to the taller dimensions of the Ultra variant. This dual-model strategy appears aimed at capturing different segments of the growing foldable market, which has seen increased competition from rivals like Google and OnePlus.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra maintains a remarkably slim profile, measuring just 4.1 mm when unfolded, making it slightly thinner than the Z Fold 7. Despite the internal upgrades, Samsung has kept the weight at 215 grams. This engineering feat places the device as one of the lightest large-screen foldables on the market, weighing significantly less than the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which remains over 40 grams heavier.
Internal performance is driven by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy. This specialized chipset is designed to handle the intensive multitasking required by the device’s 120Hz AMOLED 2X displays. To power these components, Samsung has increased the battery capacity to 5,000 mAh, a notable jump from the 4,400 mAh found in previous iterations. The device also debuts a dual-path charging architecture that supports 45-watt fast charging, designed to distribute power more efficiently and reduce heat during rapid top-ups.
Photography remains a central focus for the Ultra tier. While the 200-megapixel main sensor matches the resolution of the previous flagship, it has been refined with improved high dynamic range (HDR) processing. The ultrawide camera has seen a more dramatic upgrade, moving from 12MP to a 50MP sensor to capture more detail in wide-angle shots. For video professionals, the inclusion of an APV codec and Cine LUT support allows for more flexible 8K video editing and color grading, bringing the foldable closer to the capabilities of professional cinema cameras.
Durability continues to be a priority for Samsung’s folding glass technology. Both new models retain an IP48 rating for dust and water resistance. While foldables were once considered fragile, the industry has moved toward more robust hinge designs and protective layers that allow these devices to survive daily environmental exposure. The displays also feature Vision Booster technology, which automatically adjusts contrast and brightness to ensure the screen remains legible even under direct midday sun.
Pre-orders for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra have already begun at major global retailers and carriers. Samsung has confirmed that official shipping and retail availability will start on August 8. The standard Galaxy Z Fold 8, which offers a different ergonomic experience with its wider 1,848 x 2,448 resolution internal screen, will serve as a slightly more affordable alternative in the new lineup.
