Spotify Launches AI-Powered Running Mode to Match Music Tempo with Runner Cadence

The new iOS feature builds personalized, tempo-matched workouts with real-time voice prompts.

Spotify has introduced an algorithmic running feature built to customize audio playback to a runner’s pace and workout structure, expanding its push into dedicated fitness technology.

The update, accessible through the platform’s Fitness Hub, allows subscribers to tailor music selection based on tempo, workout duration, and specific training structures. Powered by generative artificial intelligence capabilities developed over the past year, the tool builds dynamic soundtracks designed to adjust across different phases of an athletic session.

Within the new interface, runners can select from 25 training presets, including steady-state runs, interval training, and pyramid routines. Beyond matching beats per minute (BPM) to target cadences, the mode delivers real-time verbal voice prompts to guide runners through transitions between work and recovery phases. These audio cues are currently restricted to English.

Aligning music cadence with athletic movement is a well-established biomechanical strategy in endurance sports. Auditory rhythm assists runners in maintaining consistent stride rates, reducing perceived exertion, and regulating energy expenditure during high-intensity training intervals.

Spotify’s internal usage data revealed that users frequently leveraged prompt-based playlist tools for exercise routines, prompting the audio giant to build a specialized experience. The standalone release follows recent shifts across the digital fitness ecosystem, coming months after athletic tracking platform Strava discontinued its native Spotify audio player integration within its core tracking interface.

The launch also builds on Spotify’s previous fitness initiatives, including an integration partnership established with interactive exercise equipment maker Peloton earlier this year. As streaming services compete for active daily engagement, dedicated workout tools allow platforms to retain users directly within their proprietary environments.

The running mode deployed on Wednesday for Spotify Premium subscribers using iOS devices across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden.
