G.Skill Begins $2.4 Million Settlement Payouts Over RAM Speed Claims

Claimants receive $20 to $25 payments following dispute over advertised DDR4 and DDR5 memory speeds

Payments are officially reaching consumers involved in a $2.4 million class action settlement against G.Skill over how the manufacturer advertised its DDR4 and DDR5 memory speeds. Claimants expecting substantial payouts will see modest sums instead, with individual distributions averaging between $20 and $25.

Disbursements started arriving this week, following a six-month period since the settlement agreement was first announced. Online posts displaying transaction screenshots reveal one buyer receiving $19.68 via Zelle, while two other participants reportedly collected $24.60 each. In line with standard class action procedures, individual payout figures vary based on total valid submissions and the quantity of eligible items bought by each participant.

Distribution of the funds was initiated by the settlement administrator on August 18, after receiving final judicial approval on June 9. With the claims submission deadline having closed on April 7, buyers who failed to apply in time are no longer able to collect a recovery.

Originating in 2022, the class action suit alleged that G.Skill engaged in misleading marketing by promoting desktop DDR4 and DDR5 memory kits at performance speeds unattainable directly out of the box without manual overclocking.

Attorneys for the plaintiffs asserted that consumers were not adequately informed that reaching the transfer rates printed on product packaging required activating overclocking profiles or tweaking motherboard BIOS configurations.

By default, contemporary computer memory modules initialize using conservative JEDEC parameters. Reaching rated frequencies generally necessitates turning on Intel’s XMP or AMD’s EXPO profiles, while top stable operational speeds remain constrained by the motherboard and the integrated memory controller of the processor. While seasoned hardware builders are familiar with this requirement, the litigation focused on whether everyday consumers were given clear notice of these technical conditions.

The JEDEC Solid State Technology Association sets universal baseline specifications to guarantee that memory sticks boot safely across all compatible system hardware. Intel Extreme Memory Profile (XMP) and AMD Extended Profiles for Overclocking (EXPO) store factory-tested profile settings directly on the memory module’s SPD chip, allowing users to apply higher voltage and tighter timings beyond default JEDEC limits through a single setting in the system firmware.

Eligibility for the settlement was limited to U.S. residents who bought desktop G.Skill DDR4 kits rated over 2,133 MHz or DDR5 kits rated above 4,800 MHz from January 31, 2018, to January 7, 2026. Households were allowed to claim as many as five qualifying items without presenting receipts, though documentation was necessary for higher unit counts.

Throughout the proceedings, G.Skill rejected all claims of misconduct and maintained that its hardware was accurately designated and met advertised benchmarks. Entering into the agreement permitted the manufacturer to conclude the legal challenge without a judicial ruling on potential express warranty breaches or consumer protection law violations.

Beyond monetary distributions, G.Skill committed to modifying its retail packaging, online product listings, and technical specifications provided to retail partners. Advertised frequencies must now feature “up to” terminology alongside explicit disclosures explaining that achieving top speeds requires BIOS setting modifications or overclocking and remains contingent on CPU and motherboard capabilities.

From the total $2.4 million settlement pool, $800,000 was set aside for legal fees while administrative expenses absorbed $295,000. Prior court records indicated that approximately $1.17 million was left for distribution among participating buyers, capping individual payments at a fraction of a new memory module’s retail cost.
