Crunchyroll Brings Anime Streaming to In-Car Displays via Appning

Anime fans may soon access their favorite shows directly from their vehicle displays, following Crunchyroll’s rollout on the Appning app store. The expansion introduces anime programming to connected vehicles, subject to individual car model compatibility, building on the broader adoption of video platforms in modern automotive dashboards.

Over 40 automotive manufacturers utilize Appning, including prominent brands such as BMW, Mercedes Benz, Volkswagen Group, Mini, Lotus, and SAIC Motor. While BMW drivers can already stream Crunchyroll content, Appning confirmed that rollout to additional carmakers will follow. Notably, the service will not feature in the Afeela 1—a project from Sony, Crunchyroll’s parent company, and Honda—after the joint venture canceled the electric vehicle several months ago.

Automotive app marketplaces have expanded rapidly as carmakers seek to turn dashboard displays into full-fledged media centers. Systems like Appning—developed under automotive supplier Forvia—allow car manufacturers to deliver third-party software updates over the air, targeting parked drivers during EV charging sessions or idle periods without requiring custom software builds for each vehicle brand.

“Through Appning, Crunchyroll will be available directly within connected car environments across global regions including Asia, Australia, Europe, India, Latin America, and North America,” Crunchyroll stated in a formal announcement released on LinkedIn.

To satisfy driver safety regulations, onboard video playback remains locked strictly to when the vehicle is immobilized. These software safeguards prevent drivers from engaging with shows such as Dan Da Dan or Chillin’ in Another World with Level 2 Super Cheat Powers while navigating traffic, restricting playback to parked periods on the infotainment system.
