Sega’s ‘Golden Axe’ Animated Series Sets September Premiere on Paramount+

Animated adaptation of Sega's arcade classic heads to streaming with star-studded voice cast.

Paramount+ has released the official trailer for its animated adaptation of Golden Axe, confirming a September 16 debut for the series first announced in 2024. The project is part of Sega’s broader strategy to revive its legacy video game properties through linear television adaptations alongside new interactive entries.

The animated series follows three heroes on a journey to free the kingdom of Yuria from Death Adder, an evil warlord wielding the titular Golden Axe.

The trailer features several nods to the arcade game, including a scene mimicking the character selection screen and Tyris noting the group must “defeat a series of progressively harder enemies until we have a big final battle with Death Adder.” Filled with self-aware humor targeting mini-bosses, the teaser shows Tyris shouting “Sega!” as she charges into battle.

Liam McIntyre (Marvel’s Wolverine) voices Ax Battler, while Lisa Gilroy of Dropout plays Tyris and Matthew Rhys (Widow’s Bay, The Americans) portrays Gilius. Actor Danny Pudi completes the central voice cast as Hampton Squib, an ambitious newcomer to the party.

Showrunners Mike McMahan (Star Trek: Lower Decks) and Joe Chandler (American Dad) created the series. Originally slated to air on Comedy Central, the series moved to Paramount+ for its official release.

The move to Paramount+ extends the streaming platform’s ongoing relationship with Sega, following the commercial success of the Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise and its 2024 television spinoff Knuckles, which have combined for over $700 million in global box office revenue.

The debut season consists of 10 episodes. While episode runtimes have not been disclosed, the full season length draws comparisons to the 1989 arcade original, which takes roughly 32 minutes to complete. The television premiere comes as Sega actively prepares a new Golden Axe game title.
