EVgo to Deploy Tesla V4 Supercharger Hardware to Fix EV Charging Cable Headaches

EVgo is adopting Tesla V4 Supercharger hardware across its charging network, bringing significantly longer cables and seamless app integration to public fast-charging locations. The addition directly targets one of the most persistent frustrations for non-Tesla drivers using existing Tesla infrastructure: awkwardly short cables. On older V3 chargers, non-Tesla vehicles with charge ports in varying locations often forced drivers to park at awkward angles or take up multiple stalls just to plug in. The V4 hardware eliminates that issue with extended cable lengths built to reach any port layout.

Drivers using these new EVgo-hosted V4 units will be able to initiate charging sessions via the Tesla app, while the charging locations themselves will be indexed across both the EVgo and Tesla mobile apps. The cross-platform visibility is designed to streamline route planning as North American automakers transition to the North American Charging Standard.

“EVgo is making it easier for EV drivers to find convenient fast charging, and we’re bringing more infrastructure options to communities across America to serve the growing demand for public charging,” said EVgo CEO Badar Khan. “With this deployment, we look forward to welcoming more Tesla and NACS drivers to the EVgo network.”

The hardware sharing provides a timely financial boost for Tesla. As car sales margins compress under ongoing price cuts, rising inflation, and tariffs, the automaker has increasingly relied on high-margin service revenue to help fund its heavy capital expenditures in artificial intelligence and robotics. Licensing fees from partners like EVgo and steady usage fees from expanded Supercharger access generate reliable recurring cash flow.

EVgo is not exclusively pivoting to third-party hardware, however. The company confirmed that the first deployments of its own next-generation proprietary DC fast chargers remain on track to launch by the end of the year.
