Alphabet Overhauls DeepMind Leadership as Demis Hassabis Steps Down and Jeff Dean Departs
Demis Hassabis transitions to Alphabet chief scientist and DeepMind chairman as Koray Kavukcuoglu takes over operations amid broader AI restructuring.
Alphabet Inc. is restructuring executive leadership across its artificial intelligence operations, with Google DeepMind Chief Executive Demis Hassabis stepping down after 14 years to become Alphabet’s chief scientist and chairman of the AI research unit.
Koray Kavukcuoglu, the chief technology officer of DeepMind, has been promoted to senior vice president and will assume control of day-to-day operations, reporting directly to Alphabet Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai. DeepMind, which was acquired by Google in 2014, has not previously operated with a chairman separate from its executive leadership.
The executive realignment coincides with the departure of Jeff Dean, Alphabet’s current chief scientist, who is leaving the company to launch a new artificial intelligence venture named Discovery Loop. The startup will focus on engineering self-improving AI models designed to minimize human intervention in scientific processes.
“We think there is opportunity for AI to more fully automate what has traditionally been a very human-intensive experimental loop,” Dean said in an interview with The New York Times.
Alphabet will invest an undisclosed sum into Discovery Loop, act as its primary cloud service provider, and permit several Google researchers to join Dean at the venture.
The management changes occur during an aggressive capital deployment push by Alphabet to compete with generative AI leaders OpenAI and Anthropic. Alphabet has committed up to $40 billion in capital to Anthropic, following an initial $10 billion investment in April, with an additional $30 billion subject to specific technical and performance milestones.
Internally, DeepMind has been undergoing structural shifts, recently disbanding the team behind AlphaFold—the Nobel Prize-winning AI program capable of predicting 3D protein structures from amino acid sequences to accelerate treatments for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Following the disbandment, a portion of the team was reassigned within Google while other personnel departed.
Hassabis will retain his leadership of Isomorphic Labs, the commercial pharmaceutical spinoff that applies AI models to drug discovery, alongside his new corporate duties supervising Alphabet’s umbrella scientific research.
