SteamOS Benchmarks on AMD Strix Halo Laptop Show 1440p Gaming Advantage
Independent testing demonstrates Valve's operating system running natively on AMD's flagship APU hardware.
A real-world hardware benchmark has demonstrated that Valve Corp.’s SteamOS operating system can run natively on high-performance third-party laptop hardware, driving demanding AAA titles past 60 frames per second at 1440p resolution on AMD Inc.’s Strix Halo platform.
The testing, conducted by technology reviewer ETA Prime on an Asus TUF Gaming A14 laptop, verified that SteamOS 3.9 operates on non-Steam Deck x86 hardware without relying on Microsoft Corp.’s Windows 11. The installation utilized an official Steam Deck recovery image deployed directly to the laptop, which is powered by an AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 392 APU featuring 12 Zen 5 processing cores and an integrated Radeon 8060S graphics processor alongside 32GB of LPDDR5X-8000 memory.
System diagnostics confirmed native hardware component support under SteamOS, including wireless networking, Bluetooth connectivity, USB interface routing, and peripheral recognition across both the primary gaming interface and standard desktop mode. The notebook’s 14-inch 2,560 × 1,600 display retained full operational functionality up to its 165Hz refresh rate.
In graphical benchmarking, the system averaged more than 80 frames per second in Spider-Man 2 at 1440p resolution using High settings with AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) disabled. Cyberpunk 2077 recorded a stable 60 frames per second at 1440p under the High preset with FSR 2.1 enabled, tested without AI-based frame generation to measure baseline rendering output.
Performance evaluation across other titles showed Halo: Campaign Evolved running at 70 frames per second at 1440p on High settings with FSR set to Medium. Crimson Desert maintained consistent playback at 1440p on High settings, while Doom: The Dark Ages required High settings with FSR set to Balanced to surpass 60 frames per second after encountering frame drops on Ultra presets.
Power measurements on the notebook’s 73Wh battery yielded two hours and 25 minutes of continuous runtime in Cyberpunk 2077 rendered at 800p resolution, decreasing to one hour and 40 minutes at 1200p resolution. In lower-overhead games, including the Metroidvania title Hollow Knight: Silksong at 1200p resolution, overall power draw stayed under 16W, extending total battery longevity to between four and seven hours depending on display parameters.
The successful deployment comes as computer hardware manufacturers look to alternative operating systems to maximize efficiency on handheld and ultra-portable gaming systems, where background tasks in standard desktop operating systems often reduce battery performance and graphics allocation.
