Manchester United and Arsenal Set to Clash Over Aston Villa Defender Ezri Konsa
The highly durable Aston Villa defender has emerged as a key summer target for both Premier League giants.
A high-stakes Premier League transfer battle is taking shape ahead of the summer window, with Manchester United and Arsenal reportedly set to compete for the signature of Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa.
According to reports from Spanish outlet Fichajes, Manchester United have identified the 28-year-old centre-back as a primary target. This development follows interest from Arsenal, who, as previously reported by the Telegraph via Football Talk, are also closely monitoring the highly rated defender to strengthen their defensive options.
### A Pillar of Consistency at Villa Park
Konsa has built a reputation as one of the most reliable and durable central defenders in English football. Over the past four Premier League campaigns, he has been absent for a mere 11 league matches—a remarkable fitness record that has anchored Aston Villa’s backline during a period of historic success. His consistency was vital in helping the club secure two top-four finishes over the last three seasons, bringing Champions League football back to the West Midlands.
During the 2025/26 campaign, Konsa made 48 appearances across all competitions. He played an instrumental role in ending the club’s 30-year wait for a major trophy, helping them secure the UEFA Europa League title.
His stellar club form translated to the international stage, earning him a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s 26-man England squad for the FIFA World Cup. Konsa proved to be exceptionally composed on the world stage, completing an outstanding 97.1% of his passes across his first six starts for the national team. England’s tournament eventually ended with a semi-final elimination against Argentina, a match in which Konsa featured as a substitute off the bench.
### Defensive Rebuild at Old Trafford
At Manchester United, manager Michael Carrick is reportedly looking to inject more resilience and tactical discipline into his defensive unit. Carrick has requested a combative centre-back capable of commanding the backline. Club staff have been highly impressed by Konsa’s aerial strength, aggressiveness in individual duels, tactical brilliance, and physical presence.
United’s interest is also driven by potential outgoings. Key defender Lisandro Martinez is attracting serious interest from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid and Barcelona. Should the Argentine depart Old Trafford this summer, Konsa has been identified as the ideal replacement.
While Carrick currently has options including Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Maguire—who recently signed a contract extension—and highly rated youngsters Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven, squad depth remains a concern. Matthijs de Ligt struggled with recurring injury concerns that sidelined him for most of the second half of last season, highlighting United’s need for a durable, proven Premier League defender.
### Valuation and Competition
Securing Konsa’s services will not be straightforward or cheap. The defender is under contract at Villa Park until 2028, giving Aston Villa a strong negotiating position. The club has reportedly placed a valuation of £42-51m on the player, meaning the 20-time English champions will need to submit a substantial offer to tempt Villa into selling.
Furthermore, United face stiff competition from Arsenal. The Gunners are reportedly considering defensive reinforcements of their own following an injury to William Saliba, which has exposed their depth at the back. To secure their target, United will need to act decisively and meet Villa’s valuation before their North London rivals can steal a march in the race for one of the league’s most dependable defenders.
