Chelsea Agree Record £117m Deal to Sign Aston Villa Star Morgan Rogers
The 23-year-old forward will undergo a medical on Monday after Chelsea hijacked Arsenal's pursuit to seal a British record transfer.

Chelsea have reached an agreement with Premier League rivals Aston Villa for the permanent transfer of forward Morgan Rogers in a deal set to break the British transfer record, according to reports from David Ornstein.
The Blues will pay a staggering £117 million for the 23-year-old attacker, eclipsing the previous British record fee of £116 million that Manchester City paid Nottingham Forest to secure Elliot Anderson. The transfer represents another massive statement of intent from Chelsea’s hierarchy, who have consistently broken market boundaries in recent transfer windows to secure elite young talent.
A Hijacked Deal and Alonso’s Influence
Rogers had been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal this summer. Reports from Football Talk, citing transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, indicated that the Gunners were actively planning to accelerate their efforts to secure his signature. However, Chelsea managed to steal a march on their London rivals.
A decisive factor in the player’s decision was Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso, who reportedly played a crucial role in convincing the forward to choose Stamford Bridge over other suitors. Rogers is now scheduled to undergo his medical on Monday before putting pen to paper on a six-year contract, which includes a club option for an additional year.
A Meteoric Rise
Since joining Aston Villa from Middlesbrough during the 2024 winter transfer window, Rogers has experienced a sensational ascent. Over the past two seasons, he has established himself as one of the most dynamic offensive forces in English football, registering 60 goal contributions across all competitions, including 26 during the last campaign.
His stellar individual performances earned him the prestigious 2024–25 PFA Young Player of the Year award. Crucially, his output helped guide Aston Villa to UEFA Champions League qualification in two of the last three seasons.
Villa manager Unai Emery, who has previously described the versatile forward as “fantastic,” also oversaw Rogers’ stellar performances in continental competition. Rogers was named the Player of the Tournament in the Europa League after delivering eight goal contributions, helping Villa secure their first major silverware since 1996.
The Stamford Bridge Reunion and Tactical Questions
The move to Stamford Bridge will reunite Rogers with Cole Palmer. Both players progressed through the Manchester City youth academy before seeking first-team opportunities elsewhere.
Their reunion is bound to reignite a lighthearted debate among supporters regarding the iconic “cold” celebration. Palmer famously debuted the celebration for Chelsea during a 3-2 victory over Luton Town on December 30, 2023, but both players have used it regularly, sparking ongoing discussions over who originally pioneered the gesture.
Beyond celebrations, Alonso faces an intriguing tactical puzzle. Both Rogers and Palmer possess highly versatile profiles and thrive in central creative spaces. If Xabi Alonso deploys his preferred three-at-the-back system, finding the optimal balance in the attacking midfield line will be a primary objective.
With Chelsea’s international players scheduled to report for the club’s preseason tour of Asia next month, the upcoming friendly fixtures should provide a clearer picture of how Alonso plans to integrate his expensive new signing alongside Palmer ahead of the new campaign.
