BYD Seal 08 Launches in China: 694-HP Flagship Sedan Secures 65,000 Orders

BYD’s aggressive expansion of its premium lineup has reached a new milestone with the official launch of the BYD Seal 08 in China. Positioned as a flagship-tier large sedan, this new model is designed to disrupt the premium segment by offering a compelling mix of cutting-edge technology, massive proportions, and highly competitive pricing. Starting at 196,900 yuan (approximately $28,980 USD or 106,400 AED), the Seal 08 is available in both battery-electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) configurations, catering to a wide range of consumer preferences.

The market response has been nothing short of explosive. Within just over 30 hours of its official launch, BYD recorded approximately 65,000 locked-in orders. This impressive figure includes 40,000 pre-orders placed since June 12, supplemented by more than 25,000 new orders secured immediately after the final pricing was announced.

Executive Dimensions and Road Presence

The first thing that stands out about the Seal 08 is its sheer scale. Measuring 5.15 meters (202.7 inches) in length, 1.99 meters (78.3 inches) in width, and 1.50 meters (59 inches) in height, it commands a serious presence on the road. A generous 3.03-meter (119.3-inch) wheelbase places it firmly in the full-size executive sedan category, ensuring limousine-like rear-seat legroom and a smooth, stable highway ride.

To support these grand dimensions, BYD has equipped the sedan with its advanced 800-volt electrical architecture and the sophisticated DiSus-A air suspension system. The 800V system is a critical engineering highlight, enabling ultra-fast charging capabilities and significantly improving overall energy management efficiency. Meanwhile, the DiSus-A active air suspension system works dynamically to optimize body control, mitigate body roll during cornering, and deliver a plush ride quality that filters out road imperfections.

Powertrain Diversity: EV vs. PHEV

BYD’s dual-pathway powertrain strategy is on full display here, though early buyers are showing a clear preference for pure electricity. Fully electric models account for over 65% of the total customer orders so far.

For those opting for the BEV route, the undisputed star of the lineup is the flagship dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant. This high-performance trim delivers a combined output of 510 kW—equivalent to a staggering 694 horsepower. This immense power catapults the large sedan from 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in a sports-car-shaming 3.3 seconds. Despite this performance, efficiency remains high, with a driving range of up to 905 km under China’s CLTC testing cycle.

For buyers prioritizing maximum versatility and long-distance touring, the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variants offer a highly compelling alternative. The PHEV version boasts an impressive electric-only range of up to 400 km, allowing for emissions-free daily commuting. When the internal combustion engine joins the mix, the total combined cruising range reaches an astonishing 1,660 km, virtually eliminating any semblance of range anxiety.

Production Challenges and Battery Technology

The overwhelming demand for the Seal 08 has already put a strain on BYD’s manufacturing pipeline. The vehicle relies on BYD’s latest energy storage technology, and the automaker is currently working to scale up the production of its second-generation Blade battery cells.

Currently, the factory’s production capacity stands at approximately 8,000 vehicles per month. With tens of thousands of orders already on the books, dealerships are quoting delivery wait times of between two and three months for some of the most popular trim levels. As BYD ramps up battery production, resolving these bottlenecks will be crucial to sustaining the sedan’s initial sales momentum.
