2027 Audi RS5 First Drive: Defying Physics with High-Voltage Performance

When the first details of the redesigned 2027 Audi RS5 emerged, the automotive enthusiast community fixated on a singular, staggering statistic: its weight. Tipping the scales at a hefty 5,192 pounds, this new generation is more than 1,000 pounds heavier than its predecessor. To put that in perspective, this sports sedan weighs more than a three-row Audi Q7 SUV. On paper, it seemed physics had finally caught up with Audi Sport.
But spec sheets rarely tell the whole story. For those who prefer to reserve judgment until tires actually meet tarmac, there is excellent news: the 2027 Audi RS5 is an absolute triumph behind the wheel. By combining cutting-edge chassis technology with a potent electrified powertrain, Audi has crafted a vehicle that delivers a complete package—blending striking design, advanced cabin technology, and daily-driver comfort with genuine, track-ready capability.
To understand how Audi mitigated this massive weight gain, one must look under the hood. The brand has fully embraced the performance potential of electrification, equipping the RS5 with a sophisticated plug-in hybrid powertrain. The internal combustion heart of the system is a twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V6 engine that generates 503 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque on its own, routing power through an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Nestled within that eight-speed gearbox is a 174-hp electric motor. When these two power sources combine forces, the RS5 unleashes a massive 630 horsepower and 609 pound-feet of torque. Despite its substantial mass, Audi claims the sedan will rocket from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.6 seconds—a figure that feels conservative from the driver’s seat, where the instantaneous electric torque makes off-the-line acceleration feel much more violent.
Beyond straight-line speed, the hybrid system also offers real-world efficiency, delivering up to 50 miles of pure EV driving range (with official estimates hovering around 40 miles). This dual personality allows the RS5 to transition seamlessly from a silent, zero-emission commuter to a backroad carver.
Chassis Magic and Dynamic Torque Control
While the hybrid powertrain provides the muscle, it is the chassis technology that performs the real magic. The centerpiece of the RS5’s handling prowess is the Dynamic Torque Control system. Rather than relying on traditional, brake-based torque vectoring—which can feel artificial and disrupt momentum—the RS5 utilizes a small electric motor integrated into the rear axle assembly alongside an open differential and a planetary gear set.
This setup allows the RS5 to operate with a distinct rear-biased behavior, capable of directing up to 85 percent of available torque to the rear wheels. The system shifts power between the left and right rear wheels with astonishing speed and precision, actively pushing the car through corners and neutralizing understeer before it can even begin.
To put this technology to the test, we took the RS5 to the ÖAMTC Driving Technique and Experience Center, a highly technical handling track in Austria. At the suggestion of the chassis tuning engineers, we bypassed the extreme RS Torque Rear drift mode initially and dialed the car into Dynamic mode.
The results were immediate and eye-opening. The RS5 is remarkably playful on track. On corner exit, the rear end rotates in a progressive, highly controllable manner. Because it retains the security of quattro all-wheel drive, you can drop the hammer early, letting the front wheels pull you straight as you rocket toward the next apex. Even when tossed over off-camber crests and sudden elevation changes, the sedan shrugs off the disruption, slides just enough to keep things exciting, and claws its way forward.
Crucial to this composure are the twin-valve suspension dampers. By utilizing dedicated valves to handle compression and rebound independently, the suspension manages body roll with absolute authority without resorting to a punishingly stiff ride. The sheer mass of the vehicle simply evaporates once you start stringing corners together.

Everyday Usability and Aggressive Styling
Away from the test track, our road route wound through quaint Austrian villages, sweeping alpine passes, and high-speed highway stretches. The weather was characteristically unpredictable, throwing bright sunshine, heavy rain, and two separate snowstorms at us in a single afternoon.
Normally, navigating a 630-hp sedan through a snowstorm on wide, 285-section high-performance summer tires would be a white-knuckle affair. However, the RS5 remained completely unflappable, keeping the driver comfortable and confident. Those wide Pirellis are part of the optional Audi Sport Package, which also raises the top speed from 155 mph to 177 mph and adds powerful carbon-ceramic brakes, a revised front fascia, unique interior trim, and black-finished exhaust tips.
Visually, the RS5 commands serious road presence. It shares only its hood with the standard A5; every other body panel has been massaged by Audi Sport. The boxed, flared fenders—complete with functional heat extractors behind the front wheels—give the car a muscular, wide-body stance. At the rear, the dramatic oval exhaust outlets add plenty of visual attitude.
For buyers looking to stand out further, the Audi Exclusive program offers extensive personalization options, including eye-catching gold wheels, contrast cabin stitching, and gorgeous paint options like Bedford Green.
If there is a disappointment, it is the absence of the gorgeous RS5 Avant wagon at launch for the North American market. However, there is a glimmer of hope. Audi CEO Gernot Döllner noted that while the wagon won’t be available in the U.S. initially, the brand is actively monitoring customer feedback, and American dealers are pushing hard to bring the longroof version stateside.

The 2027 Audi RS5 is an engineering marvel. By all the laws of physics, a 5,192-pound hybrid sedan should plow through corners and feel ponderous. Instead, it dances with the agility of a vehicle that is hundreds of pounds lighter and two doors shorter.
While the throttle tip-in can occasionally feel a bit touchy when transitioning between electric and gasoline power, and purists may wonder if a lighter, non-hybrid version would have been simpler, there is no denying the capability of this package. With an estimated starting price between $110,000 and $120,000, it is a premium machine that justifies its cost by delivering supercar-adjacent performance, genuine daily comfort, and the ability to run silent, emissions-free errands on electric power alone.
