The Hyundai Ioniq 9 enters the competitive electric SUV market with a polarizing, retro-futuristic aesthetic that masks a surprisingly conservative and user-centric interior. While the exterior design aims for a bold departure from industry norms, the cabin experience prioritizes ergonomic familiarity over the digital minimalism often found in modern electric vehicles.
At the heart of the vehicle is a 110.3-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery powering a 422-horsepower dual-motor system. During testing on Michigan winter roads, the SUV demonstrated a planted feel, though its 6,008-pound curb weight becomes apparent at highway speeds. To combat the inherent noise of a heavy EV, Hyundai utilized active noise cancellation and laminated glass, resulting in a cabin environment that remains notably quiet even in harsh conditions.
While the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) provides standardized range estimates to help consumers compare efficiency, real-world performance is frequently dictated by climate. The Ioniq 9 is rated for up to 311 miles per charge, but cold-weather testing saw that figure adjust to approximately 280 miles.
Inside the Calligraphy Design trim, the focus remains on utility. Two 12.3-inch displays dominate the dashboard, yet Hyundai has resisted the trend of moving all functions to a touchscreen. Physical buttons for audio and primary temperature controls are retained, though the HVAC system utilizes a capacitive touch panel for secondary adjustments. Connectivity is handled through integrated Apple CarPlay and Android Auto software.
Passenger convenience is supported by six 100-watt USB-C charging ports distributed across all three rows. The flat floor architecture, a hallmark of dedicated EV platforms, allows for expanded storage in the center console and beneath the dashboard.
The 2026 model carries a base price of $61,055, while the high-specification AWD Performance variant tested reached an as-tested price of $79,540.
