Chevrolet Discontinues Corvette E-Ray to Launch Track-Focused Grand Sport X

General Motors replaces the touring-focused E-Ray with a track-tuned hybrid featuring a new engine and electric motor.

Chevrolet has discontinued the Corvette E-Ray three years after its debut, shifting its hybrid strategy toward track performance with the introduction of the new Grand Sport X. The updated model replaces the touring-oriented E-Ray with a sharper, high-output setup featuring an all-new engine, a redesigned electric motor, and re-engineered control software.

The shift follows owner feedback on the original E-Ray, which was introduced in 2023 as an all-weather grand tourer equipped with standard all-season tires and quiet electric cruising modes. Keith Badgley, lead development engineer for the E-Ray, Grand Sport X, and ZR1X, confirmed that buyers frequently took E-Rays to race tracks and reported handling limitations, specifically a tendency toward understeer calibrated for street safety rather than circuit lap times.

To revise the vehicle’s driving dynamics, General Motors fitted the Grand Sport X with a different front electric drive motor alongside additional drive modes and torque-vectoring software tweaks. The mechanical and electronic changes remove the grand-touring feel of the E-Ray in favor of sharper turn-in and high-speed cornering stability.

Engineering for the Grand Sport X was driven by technological developments from the top-tier 1,250-horsepower (932 kW) ZR1X hybrid. Data gathered during the development of the high-output ZR1X allowed engineers to recalibrate the C8 platform’s electrified front axle for sustained track use.

Historically, Chevrolet’s Grand Sport designation has signified track-focused chassis upgrades and wider bodywork paired with mid-tier powertrains, filling the slot between base Stingray models and upper-tier track variants like the Z06. The adoption of the badge for the Grand Sport X integrates hybrid propulsion directly into Chevrolet’s core track-oriented lineup.
