DoorDash Secures FAA Approval to Launch Custom Commercial Drone Network
The food delivery giant joins an elite group of operators cleared for commercial drone flights as it targets autumn deliveries.
DoorDash is expanding beyond conventional road delivery after securing key regulatory clearance from the United States government to operate its own commercial aerial delivery fleet.
The food delivery giant received Part 135 air carrier certification from the Federal Aviation Administration, granting the company authorization to deploy self-designed aircraft for merchant fulfillment. With plans to launch initial commercial flights this autumn, DoorDash becomes one of just eight operators to secure the stringent FAA designation, joining industry peers such as Wing, Amazon Prime Air, and Flytrex.
The move directly targets persistent last-mile logistics inefficiencies. Internal company data revealed that deliveries spanning three to five miles accounted for more than 20 percent of total orders last year. However, these mid-range journeys took nearly 25 percent longer to complete than shorter trips, primarily due to delays in securing available couriers.
By offloading mid-distance orders to automated aircraft, DoorDash aims to optimize shift density for its human drivers, allowing gig workers to concentrate on high-turnaround, short-distance deliveries in concentrated commercial corridors.
Unlike its previous reliance exclusively on third-party hardware, the new DoorDash Air ecosystem was engineered in-house by DoorDash Labs, the company’s internal robotics and autonomy division previously responsible for developing the Dot ground delivery robot. The company designed the aircraft within the United States and sourced the majority of components domestically.
Harrison Shih, head of DoorDash Air, emphasized that the initiative encompasses an end-to-end infrastructure—spanning custom flight hardware, ground logistics hubs, and seamless handoff systems—designed to make automated aerial fulfillment accessible across merchant categories.
Order dispatch will be managed through an algorithmic Autonomous Delivery Platform, which dynamically evaluates incoming orders to assign the most efficient fulfillment method, whether via a human driver, ground robot, or aerial drone. Despite building its proprietary fleet, DoorDash plans to maintain existing partnerships with third-party drone providers Wing and Flytrex to complement its coverage network.
