FDA Clears Aletta Robotic Blood Draw Device for Outpatient Medical Facilities

Single Operators Can Oversee Up to Three Robotic Venipuncture Systems Simultaneously

The US Food and Drug Administration has approved a new product aimed at automating blood draws in outpatient situations. Aletta is a standalone robotic device capable of drawing blood from a patient’s arm. It uses near-infrared light and Doppler ultrasound to identify a vein and then automates the other processes of a blood draw, such as applying a tourniquet, inserting and disposing of a needle and placing a bandage on the patient. A trained phlebotomist must begin the procedure and oversee the device while it is in use, but a single person can monitor up to three Aletta robots at once.

To pinpoint suitable veins, the autonomous system combines multi-angle optical sensors with ultrasound imaging to create a three-dimensional model of the patient’s arm anatomy. According to regulatory documentation submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the system’s software calculates vein depth and alignment before guiding a robotic arm to execute needle insertion at a precise trajectory. Once blood collection completes, internal mechanisms handle sample tube loading, mixing, and needle disposal inside a sealed compartment without manual intervention.

“Blood draws are one of the most commonly performed medical procedures in the United States, yet patients may face delays due to a growing shortage of trained phlebotomists.” said Michelle Tarver, director of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. The approval for Aletta was granted based on clinical data showing it was capable of successful blood draws at rates comparable to or better than a phlebotomist.

The clinical data submitted for regulatory review evaluated performance metrics across clinical trial cohorts, assessing venipuncture success rates on the first insertion attempt. Survey data from the American Society for Clinical Pathology indicates that clinical laboratory staff vacancies have strained diagnostic infrastructure, with phlebotomy positions experiencing elevated turnover rates nationwide. By allowing healthcare staff to oversee multiple automated blood collection bays simultaneously, the technology aims to preserve clinical capacity without compromising patient throughput in high-volume outpatient centers.
