Last September, the U.S. Navy began producing a new weapon system. The system converts two light tactical vehicles into a dedicated drone hunter-killer team. The announcement came on Tuesday.

The Integrated Marine Air Defense System (MADIS) is a unique short-range, ground-based air defense system. It consists of two joint light tactical vehicles. MADIS is designed to destroy unmanned aerial systems. It also targets manned aircraft, including helicopters, according to Defense News.

Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace manufactured the MADIS system. It provides Marine units a rapid way to destroy drones and other air threats. Marines can operate without needing additional support. The system allows them to focus on targets and destroy them from fixed positions or while driving.

Each MADIS vehicle is designed to work in coordination with the other. One vehicle specializes in shooting down helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. The second vehicle focuses on countering drones.

This system gives U.S. Marines options for destroying targets. They can use Stinger missiles. A 30mm cannon is also available.

The first full production version of the MADIS system appeared last September. This followed an extensive period of trials.

MADIS replaces the Marine Corps’ previous Man-Portable Air Defense System (MANPADS). The older MANPADS was complex compared to MADIS. It required U.S. soldiers to exit their vehicles to identify and destroy air targets.

The new MADIS version is now ready for field use by U.S. Marines. It features several key technical improvements. These include enhanced targeting algorithms. Advanced sensing capabilities are also part of the upgrade. Its mobility has also been significantly boosted.

The system’s design offers sufficient flexibility. This allows for future updates. These updates will help counter evolving threats over time.

U.S. Marine soldiers began training on the new MADIS system. They conducted live-fire training exercises. This took place at the Marine Corps Air-Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, California.

Last April, U.S. Marines conducted the first live-fire training for the MADIS system. This occurred during Exercise Balikatan.
