Man Utd’s Transfer Failures Exposed in Como Champions League Rout
A seven-game winless streak highlights how restricted summer spending left Michael Carrick without adequate cover for Luke Shaw and Benjamin Sesko.

Manchester United’s 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como exposed a squad built on compromised recruitment rather than tactical errors, placing immediate pressure on chief executive Omar Berrada and the club’s ownership structure. The loss left United winless in seven matches across all competitions and 13th in the Premier League.
Head coach Michael Carrick walked directly to the 700 traveling supporters after the final whistle at Lake Como, repeatedly raising his hands in apology before ignoring his players entirely. According to reports, he refused to answer questions about his job security during his post-match press conference, stating only that the performance was “not acceptable” and that he had not given his own position any thought.
The collapse followed a summer transfer window defined by glaring omissions. United signed three midfielders but failed to secure competition for left-back Luke Shaw or striker Benjamin Sesko, according to sources familiar with the club’s operations. Sporting director Jason Wilcox operated under strict financial parameters set by executives above him, including Berrada and minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. The resulting roster depth has proven insufficient for concurrent domestic and European campaigns.
Captain Bruno Fernandes publicly dismantled Carrick’s match plan in a post-game interview with TNT Sports, criticizing the coaching staff’s decision to abandon man-to-man pressing. “Sometimes you have to be more brave under pressure, take the risk of pressing high and making them uncomfortable,” Fernandes said. Carrick responded by shifting blame to player effort, telling reporters that no system works if players do not run forward and back.
This internal fracture mirrors the final days of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure. Solskjaer made an identical gesture of apology to fans following a 4-1 defeat at Watford in November 2021 and was dismissed 24 hours later. Carrick, who won five Premier League titles and the Champions League as a United player, secured a two-year contract after winning 12 of 17 matches last season to return the club to Europe’s top competition following a two-year absence.
That early momentum evaporated quickly. After opening the current campaign with a shock defeat to newly promoted Hull and a comeback victory over Ipswich, United have not won a Premier League match. Their only other success in 11 total games came against Azerbaijan champions Sabah FK in the Champions League. The current seven-game winless streak is the club’s worst since an eight-match drought under Louis van Gaal between Nov. 25 and Dec. 28, 2015.

Como’s Nico Paz opened the scoring after 118 seconds, created the second goal, and scored a third. Joshua Zirkzee added an injury-time consolation for United, preventing what would have been the club’s joint second-worst European defeat. When United last won the Champions League in 2008, Como was playing semi-professional football in Italy’s Serie D.
Supporters directed chants against the Glazer family and Ratcliffe as the match deteriorated. United flew straight back to Manchester and face 15th-placed Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday. Bournemouth recorded 3-0 victories in their two visits to the stadium prior to a 4-4 draw last season.
