Google Brings Gemini to Apple CarPlay, But iPhone Users Miss Out on Personalized AI
Conversational navigation now, but personalized AI stays on Android

Google has quietly rolled out its Gemini AI assistant to Google Maps on Apple CarPlay, giving iPhone drivers a conversational navigation experience that Android Auto users only received days earlier. The feature appeared Monday, according to 9to5Google, marking the first time Maps has offered an integrated voice assistant on Apple’s dashboard platform.
Drivers will see a Gemini icon appear in the Maps interface during active navigation. Tapping it opens a natural-language chat that can handle multi-step requests in a single thread. Google’s example: a driver can ask for the best city-view park, follow up with the ideal visiting time, and then command navigation to that location while avoiding toll roads — all without repeating context.
Voice-based traffic incident reporting is also supported, reducing screen interaction. But the CarPlay version arrives with a conspicuous omission: the “Personalized Intelligence” layer that debuted on Android Auto last week. That system connects Gemini to a user’s Gmail, Calendar, Photos, and YouTube accounts, enabling queries like “What’s my flight gate?” or “Take me to the doctor” — the latter pulling appointment details directly from Calendar.

The result is a two-tier experience. iPhone users get conversational search and navigation today, but lack the deep personal data integration that makes the Android Auto version a proactive assistant. Google has not disclosed when — or if — Personalized Intelligence will reach CarPlay. Historically, major Maps features have arrived on Android Auto months before crossing over.

The rollout begins in the United States before expanding globally. For now, iPhone drivers gain a smarter voice interface, but the full “AI that knows you” remains an Android exclusive.
