Baleba’s United Debut Offers Carrick a Midfield Lifeline
The Cameroonian anchored a reshuffled midfield as United extended their winless streak to six matches.

Carlos Baleba started his first Premier League match for Manchester United on Saturday, anchoring a midfield that secured a 1-1 draw at Leeds United. The result extended Michael Carrick’s winless run to six games across all competitions and left the club sitting 12th in the table.
Carrick overhauled his central setup for the trip to Elland Road. He paired the Cameroonian with Andrey Santos at the base, pushing Bruno Fernandes and Youri Tielemans into advanced roles. The configuration gave United structural control they have routinely lacked this season, even if it failed to generate clear scoring chances.

“You look at the midfield with Manuel and Andey, that’s a pretty fresh spine of the team through the middle of the pitch,” Carrick told reporters after the final whistle. “And both young players are adapting to life at this football club, and I thought both of them were terrific today.”
United paid Brighton & Hove Albion a substantial fee during the summer transfer window to acquire Baleba. His arrival addresses a chronic vulnerability. Since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, the club has cycled through defensive midfielders without finding a long-term solution, spending heavily on players who failed to dictate tempo or shield the back line consistently.
The stakes for Carrick are immediate. United have won just one of their two Champions League fixtures so far. Pressure is mounting at Old Trafford as results stagnate and league position slips further from European qualification spots.
Santos showed flashes of potential alongside Baleba against Leeds, suggesting the double pivot could become a permanent fixture rather than a one-off experiment. Tielemans, signed to provide creativity, operated higher up the pitch where he faced less physical congestion.
United travel to Italy next to play Como before returning home to host Bournemouth. A league match against Chelsea follows immediately after.
