Manchester United Face Rashford Dilemma as Summerville Transfer Targets Offensive Upgrade
With Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans secured, the Red Devils turn their attention to the attack as the summer transfer window enters its final six weeks.

MANCHESTER — As the summer transfer window enters its final six weeks, Manchester United find themselves at a tactical and financial crossroads. Having already secured the signings of Belgian international Youri Tielemans and Brazilian prospect Andrey Santos to reinforce their midfield, the club’s leadership is now turning its attention to a crucial offensive rebuild.
At the heart of United’s attacking plans is a pivotal decision regarding the future of Marcus Rashford, which could directly influence a move for West Ham United forward Crysencio Summerville.
According to reports from The Guardian, Manchester United are actively considering the signing of a new winger, with the 22-year-old Summerville emerging as a highly suitable target. Following West Ham’s relegation from the Premier League, the Dutch winger is understood to be available for a cut-price fee of £30 million. Summerville, who previously caught the eye during his tenure with Leeds United before moving to East London, offers a dynamic attacking threat that has appealed to Old Trafford decision-makers.
However, any potential move for the Dutch forward hinges entirely on what happens next with Rashford. The 28-year-old academy graduate spent last season on loan at Barcelona, where he successfully reignited his career. Under the guidance of Hansi Flick at the Camp Nou, Rashford registered an impressive 14 goals and 14 assists across all competitions. That club form, combined with a decent summer representing England at the World Cup, has restored the forward’s confidence and market value.
While Barcelona had Rashford on their books temporarily, a permanent stay in Catalonia is highly unlikely after the La Liga giants completed the signing of Anthony Gordon. Consequently, Rashford is set to return to Manchester, where he is scheduled to be reintegrated into Michael Carrick‘s squad for the upcoming campaign.
Yet, his long-term future at Old Trafford remains far from certain. According to prominent football journalist David Ornstein, Manchester United could still opt to sell the forward if a suitable offer is presented. Rashford’s massive wage remains a significant consideration for United’s hierarchy as they navigate the Premier League’s strict Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Despite the financial temptation of a sale, keeping Rashford may ultimately prove to be the more prudent sporting decision for United. Entering the prime years of his career, the Englishman boasts far greater Premier League experience than Summerville. Furthermore, Rashford’s versatility allows him to operate effectively on both flanks as well as in a central striking role. Under Carrick, who has established a reputation for implementing a fluid, offensive mindset, there is strong belief within the club that Rashford could thrive once again in Manchester.
While the attack remains a priority, United’s recruitment team is also keeping an eye on further midfield reinforcements. The club has already experienced a mixed window in the engine room; while Tielemans and Santos have arrived, a highly anticipated transfer for Atalanta star Ederson ultimately fell through. In that instance, a deal could not be finalized despite personal terms and club-to-club valuations being fully agreed upon.
With the transfer deadline looming, United are still expected to target another one or two central midfielders. However, resolving the Rashford-Summerville equation will likely define the narrative of their summer business as Carrick prepares his squad for a demanding domestic and European campaign.
