Chelsea Target AS Roma Midfielder Manu Kone to Bolster Squad Amid Midfield Uncertainty

The Blues face competition from Manchester United and Atletico Madrid for the French midfielder as they look to revamp their squad.

With the new campaign fast approaching, Chelsea are looking to accelerate their transfer market activity. Despite having yet to make any noteworthy signings so far in the summer, the Blues might use the next few weeks to significantly revamp their squad and provide their tactical setup with much-needed reinforcement.

According to a report from Italian source Corriere dello Sport, the West London club has registered strong interest in acquiring AS Roma midfielder Manu Kone. The French midfielder is highly sought after following an impressive international campaign where he shone with France at this summer’s World Cup, having played five out of their seven matches.

Chelsea’s pursuit of midfield reinforcements comes amid uncertainty surrounding their current roster. The long-term continuity of Enzo Fernandez at Stamford Bridge remains doubtful, prompting club leadership to explore alternative options. Furthermore, Brazilian youngster Andrey Santos has been sold to Manchester United, and Romeo Lavia is prone to injuries, leaving the squad potentially short of reliable depth in central areas.

To address these vulnerabilities, Xabi Alonso could target a midfielder’s signing. Under his tactical vision, Kone promises to be the ideal signing for Chelsea. Alonso would likely employ the French midfielder in a dynamic double pivot alongside Moises Caicedo, establishing a robust shield in front of the defense.

Should Enzo Fernandez remain at the club, the Argentine might play in an advanced role. This tactical adjustment means Kone would be accommodated into the line-up irrespective of the former Benfica star’s future, adding a layer of physical security to the starting eleven.

Standing over six feet tall, Kone offers a commanding physical profile that would be an important asset for Chelsea. He can impose himself on his opposition by dominating aerial and ground duels, while his tackling and work-rate to cut out loose balls in midfield is vital. When in possession, he powerfully drives possession into the final third, offering a direct transition threat.

Beyond his defensive capabilities, Kone’s versatility provides immense tactical flexibility. Apart from being a handy option in defensive midfield, Kone has also played as a central midfielder on the right as well as left side of the middle of the park, giving Alonso multiple options to adjust his system depending on the opposition.

Securing his services will not be without competition. Manchester United are also believed to be keen on Kanu’s services, as per the source, while Atletico Madrid recently saw a £35 million bid turned down for him. While Kone is valued at £43 million on Transfermarkt, his official price tag is not known yet as negotiations continue.
