Real Madrid Near Multi-Million Acquisition of Yan Diomande Following Rapid Rise

Real Madrid are on the verge of completing a multi-million-pound transfer for Ivorian winger Yan Diomande, whose market valuation has soared into the £87 million to £104 million range following an explosive campaign at RB Leipzig. The impending deal comes just over a year after the 18-year-old made his senior debut against the Spanish giants at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Former Leganés manager Borja Jiménez, who now manages Qatari outfit Al Ahli, revealed that Diomande’s pathway to European football began through an unconventional scouting effort. Club owner Jeff Luhnow—the former Major League Baseball executive leading the Blue Crow Sports group—first identified Diomande playing for an affiliate academy in the United States when he was 16, presenting a homemade YouTube video to the coaching staff.

Diomande arrived in Spain in January 2025 to join Leganés’ reserve setup while recovering from an injury. His first opportunity to train alongside senior players arrived during an international break as the squad prepared to face Real Madrid. During a practice match against the reserve team, Diomande immediately stood out by outmaneuvering defenders and scoring a top-corner goal, prompting Jiménez to promote him to the senior team immediately to protect him from physical challenges.

Jiménez noted that Diomande’s technical superiority caused immediate tension in training, leading the coaching staff to manage his minutes carefully. Senior player Dani Raba was among those quickly impressed by the winger’s talent. Prior to his senior integration, Jiménez focused on establishing behavioral expectations, advising Diomande to respect team veterans, maintain a strong work ethic, and focus on team integration.

During his senior debut at the Bernabéu, Diomande created an instant impact by driving past midfielder Fede Valverde inside the penalty area in an action that yielded a strong penalty appeal. Despite spending roughly six weeks with the first team, his performances transformed Leganés’ attacking dynamic through goals and chance creation. Jiménez observed that had Diomande been fully integrated earlier in January, the club might have avoided relegation and contested for European qualification.

Following his brief spell in Spain, RB Leipzig acquired Diomande for approximately £17 million, capitalizing on reluctance from other European suitors who viewed the fee as prohibitive at the time. Leipzig’s established pipeline of developing raw talent quickly elevated Diomande’s profile, driving his transfer valuation upward by more than five times within a single year as his return to Madrid nears completion.
