Chelsea’s ongoing squad reconstruction has turned its focus toward Italy, with the Blues reportedly identifying Como defender Jacobo Ramón as a key summer transfer target.

According to a report by The Athletic, the West London club is actively exploring defensive reinforcements and has expressed a strong interest in the 21-year-old Spanish centre-back following his standout campaign in Serie A. Chelsea is reportedly considering the acquisition of at least one central defender during the current transfer window, with the possibility of adding a second. Alongside their pursuit of the young Spaniard, Chelsea is also plotting a swoop for Crystal Palace star Maxence Lacroix to bolster their backline.

From La Fábrica to Serie A Success

Ramón’s footballing journey began at local club Las Rozas before he was scouted by Real Madrid, joining the club’s prestigious youth academy, La Fábrica, at the tender age of eight. Over the next decade, he progressed through the ranks of the Spanish giants, eventually earning his senior debut for Los Blancos last year.

However, establishing himself in the star-studded Real Madrid first team proved challenging, with limited opportunities for regular game time. In search of consistent first-team football to aid his development, the defender made the permanent switch to Como last summer.

His debut season at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia proved to be a resounding success. Ramón quickly established himself as a vital cog in Como’s defense, making 37 appearances across all competitions, scoring twice, and keeping 15 clean sheets. His defensive solidity and composure helped guide the club to a historic fourth-place finish in Serie A—finishing ahead of Italian heavyweights Juventus and AC Milan—and securing qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Tactical Profile and Transfer Dynamics

Standing at 6ft 5in, Ramón is a right-footed, technically gifted centre-back who fits the profile of the modern ball-playing defender. He is highly regarded for his ability to play out from the back, his aerial dominance, and his overall defensive efficiency. Analysts suggest he possesses the necessary physical and technical attributes to adapt successfully to the high-intensity environment of the Premier League.

Currently valued at approximately £25 million by Transfermarkt, Ramón remains under contract with the Italian club until 2030. Having secured Champions League football, Como is under no immediate pressure to sell their prized asset and remains in a strong position to convince him to stay.

However, the transfer situation is complicated by the terms of his previous move from Spain. Although Real Madrid sold the defender to Como on a permanent basis, the Spanish giants retained significant leverage over his future by inserting a buyback clause alongside a 50% sell-on clause.

Furthermore, the report suggests that the opportunity to play under a Spanish legend like Xabi Alonso might tempt Ramón to make the move to Stamford Bridge this summer. Whether Chelsea will formalize their interest with an official bid remains to be seen, but the young defender’s rapid rise has certainly made him one of the most intriguing prospects of the summer window.
