The Dutch defender, previously linked with a summer exit to Liverpool, has been won over by the club's ambitious £225m rebuild and a potential captaincy role.

LONDON — In a significant shift that could define the trajectory of their upcoming Premier League campaign, Tottenham Hotspur are preparing to open formal contract negotiations with Dutch defender Micky van de Ven.

According to a report by TeamTalk, there is growing confidence within the north London club that the 23-year-old center-back can be convinced to commit his long-term future to the club, representing a stark turnaround from earlier in the summer when an exit appeared highly likely.

Van de Ven, who joined Tottenham Hotspur from Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg in 2023 and quickly established himself as one of Europe’s most promising young defenders due to his extraordinary recovery pace, had previously indicated he was “not interested in discussing fresh terms.” The Dutch international had reportedly been “targeting a move away this summer,” with reports suggesting he was “leaning towards a move to Liverpool over Manchester United.” In response, Spurs had placed a substantial valuation on the player to deter suitors.

However, the arrival of Italian tactician Roberto De Zerbi as Tottenham’s new head coach has fundamentally altered the landscape. Known for his fluid, possession-based style of play that relies heavily on technically gifted, fast central defenders, De Zerbi has quickly reshaped the atmosphere and direction of the club.

A Transformative Summer Transfer Window

The change in Van de Ven’s stance coincides with an aggressive, high-spending summer transfer window orchestrated by the Tottenham hierarchy. The club has already committed more than £225 million to reinforce the squad, securing high-profile signings including Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali, Portuguese prospect Mateus Fernandes, Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hecke, Argentine-born center-back Marcos Senesi, and experienced Scottish left-back Andy Robertson.

Furthermore, TeamTalk reports that a £60 million deal for Brazilian winger Savinho is nearing completion, while the club continues to actively search for a new marquee striker.

Sources close to the club indicate that “the transformation under De Zerbi has significantly altered Van de Ven’s thinking.” Following highly “encouraging communication with the player’s representatives during the summer,” Tottenham officials believe the groundwork has been laid to secure his long-term future.

Leadership and the Captaincy Contingency

Beyond tactical alignment, Tottenham are also prepared to offer Van de Ven a central leadership role in the squad. This strategy is partly tied to the future of Argentine World Cup winner Cristian Romero, who is expected to draw intense interest from rival European giants before the transfer window closes.

Should Romero depart, Van de Ven is regarded as one of the primary candidates to inherit the club captaincy. This potential promotion is not merely symbolic; De Zerbi reportedly views the Dutchman as “one of the pillars around which he wants to build his new-look Tottenham side.”

This approach mirrors a successful negotiation earlier in the summer. Spanish right-back Pedro Porro was similarly convinced by De Zerbi’s long-term vision for the club and subsequently committed his future by signing a new long-term contract. Tottenham are now optimistic that Van de Ven will follow a similar path.

Securing the Dutchman’s signature would represent a major coup for Tottenham Hotspur. It would not only preserve a vital defensive asset but also serve as a powerful endorsement of De Zerbi’s project and the club’s renewed competitive ambitions in the Premier League.
