Cristian Romero Seeks Tottenham Exit as Barcelona and Inter Milan Circle
The Argentine World Cup winner has reportedly expressed a preference for La Liga, leaving Spurs to contemplate a major defensive rebuild.

LONDON — Tottenham Hotspur face a pivotal summer transfer window as captain Cristian Romero has reportedly made his desire to leave the north London club clear, with a move to Spain’s La Liga emerging as his preferred destination.
According to a report from talkSPORT, the Argentine central defender is “set to leave the club this summer” after initiating discussions over his next career step. While several elite clubs across Europe are monitoring the situation, Romero’s preference is a move to LaLiga, with Barcelona believed to be among the primary clubs exploring the feasibility of a transfer.
The development puts Tottenham in a challenging position. Although Romero still has three years remaining on his contract—giving Spurs significant leverage in negotiations—the club must now weigh the financial benefits of a sale against the disruption of losing their defensive anchor and captain.

European Giants Circle the Argentine International
While Barcelona explores a potential deal, they are not the only heavyweights linked to the World Cup-winning defender. In Italy, Serie A champions Inter have maintained a longstanding admiration for Romero. The two clubs have reportedly held talks in recent days, with Romero’s name resurfacing during broader discussions that also involved Tottenham defender Djed Spence.
In Spain, Atletico Madrid has also been positioned as a realistic destination. Atletico manager Diego Simeone is known to be a keen admirer of Romero’s aggressive, front-footed style of defending. However, despite this interest, “an official bid has not been forthcoming” from the Madrid-based club, leaving Barcelona as the frontrunner should Romero secure his desired move to Spain.
Tottenham are expected to demand a premium fee for the defender. Cristian Romero remains one of the most recognizable central defenders in the squad, and his pedigree as a proven international and a key figure in Argentina’s recent global triumphs ensures he remains a highly valuable asset in the transfer market.

A Legacy of Highs and Lows in North London
Romero’s tenure has been characterized by a mixed spell since arriving at Tottenham from Atalanta in 2021. Over his 156 appearances for the club, during which he scored 13 goals, the defender has showcased world-class ability alongside periods of inconsistency and injury setbacks.
His crowning achievement with Spurs came when he helped guide the team to silverware, playing the full 90 minutes in a 1-0 victory over Manchester United to secure the Europa League in 2025.
Despite these highs, his relationship with the Tottenham fanbase has occasionally been strained. He has been singled out at times by some Tottenham supporters for erratic decision-making on the pitch. Off-field issues also fueled speculation about his commitment; notably in May, controversy arose when reports surfaced that he intended to miss Tottenham’s final match of the season to return early to Argentina, a decision he ultimately reversed.
As the summer transfer window progresses, Tottenham Hotspur faces a delicate balancing act. While the club holds contract leverage, history suggests that keeping an unsettled captain can disrupt squad harmony. If Barcelona or another La Liga suitor can match Tottenham’s valuation, Romero’s departure could become one of the defining defensive transfers of the summer.
