Manchester United Target Borussia Dortmund Midfielder Felix Nmecha in Summer Rebuild
The German international emerges as a key target for Michael Carrick’s side after missing out on Aurelien Tchouameni.

Manchester United are weighing a move for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha as they look to further fortify their squad during the current transfer window, according to reports from The Athletic. The interest comes as the Premier League giants pivot their recruitment strategy following the unavailability of long-term targets.
The pursuit of the 25-year-old German international marks a potential return to the city where he began his professional journey. A product of the Manchester City youth system, Nmecha made his senior debut for the blue side of Manchester in 2019. However, finding consistent minutes under Pep Guardiola proved difficult, leading the midfielder to seek opportunities elsewhere. He eventually departed the Etihad Stadium as a free agent to join VfL Wolfsburg, where his performances at the Volkswagen Arena caught the attention of the Bundesliga’s elite.
Borussia Dortmund secured his services in 2023, integrating him into a midfield often tasked with transitioning play in front of the famous “Yellow Wall.” While his early tenure at Signal Iduna Park was hampered by fitness issues that limited him to a rotational role, Nmecha established himself as a regular fixture last season. He recorded 42 appearances across all competitions, contributing eight goals and assists in the process.
Strategic Midfield Reinforcements
Manchester United have already been active in the market, securing the signatures of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos this summer. Despite these additions, Michael Carrick’s side remains intent on adding further depth and quality to the engine room. The club had previously identified Aurelien Tchouameni as a primary target and were prepared to launch a formal bid had the Frenchman become available. However, those plans were shelved after the midfielder committed his long-term future to Real Madrid, signing a fresh term until 2031.
With the path to Madrid blocked, United have turned their attention to Nmecha, who is viewed as a serious option to enhance the team’s tactical flexibility. Standing 6ft 3in tall, the right-footed German is described as a technically gifted box-to-box midfielder capable of providing defensive cover when required. This physical profile is often sought after in the high-intensity environment of the Premier League, where the ability to win duels and carry the ball through central zones is paramount.
Market Valuation and Competition
Securing Nmecha’s signature may prove a complex negotiation. The player recently signed a contract extension at Signal Iduna Park that ties him to the German club until 2030. Consequently, Dortmund are under no immediate pressure to sell a player currently entering the prime of his career. Transfermarkt currently values the midfielder at approximately £43m.
Should a deal for Nmecha fail to materialize, Manchester United have identified several other candidates to bolster their ranks. The club is reportedly monitoring Bristol City’s Alex Scott, Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, and Burnley’s Sander Berge as potential alternatives.
While Nmecha’s talent is undisputed—having earned a place in the Germany national team’s starting line-up—his injury record remains a point of consideration. Despite his international pedigree, he was unable to help his country advance beyond the World Cup last-32 in their most recent tournament appearance. Analysts suggest that Manchester United must conduct thorough due diligence regarding his recent fitness problems before committing to a significant financial investment this summer.
