Volkswagen has officially pulled the wraps off its latest electric contender, the Volkswagen ID. Cross. Making its global debut as a subcompact crossover designed to bridge the gap between urban agility and electric utility, the ID. Cross marks a significant step in the brand’s evolving ID. lineup. While the German automaker has opened pre-orders in its home market, a definitive delivery schedule has yet to be announced.

### Pricing and Market Positioning
In Germany, the entry-level Volkswagen ID. Cross is set to start at €27,995 (approximately $32,000). However, for those looking to secure the first available units, the versions currently open for order carry a higher starting price of €36,525 (roughly $41,700). This positioning places the ID. Cross as a premium but accessible entry into the EV market, targeting buyers who want Volkswagen’s latest technology in a footprint smaller than the ID.4.

### Dimensions and Packaging
The ID. Cross is a masterclass in space efficiency. Measuring 4.153 meters (163.5 inches) in length, 1.794 meters in width, and 1.581 meters in height, it occupies a similar footprint to the internal combustion T-Cross. Despite its compact exterior, the 2.601-meter wheelbase allows for a surprisingly spacious five-passenger cabin. Storage is equally impressive; the rear cargo area offers 475 liters of space—outclassing the T-Cross by 20 liters—and is supplemented by a 25-liter front trunk (frunk) designed to house charging cables and small items.

### Performance and the MEB+ Platform
Underpinning the vehicle is the new MEB+ platform, an evolution of Volkswagen’s dedicated electric architecture designed for better efficiency and faster processing. The ID. Cross utilizes a front-wheel-drive configuration and will be offered with three distinct power outputs: 85 kW (116 hp), 99 kW (135 hp), and a range-topping 155 kW (211 hp).

Energy is stored in one of two battery packs with net capacities of 37 kWh or 52 kWh. When equipped with the larger battery, the ID. Cross achieves a driving range of up to 427 kilometers (approximately 265 miles) based on the WLTP cycle.

Charging performance is tailored for modern lifestyles. The vehicle supports 11 kW AC charging for overnight replenishment. On a DC fast charger, the 37 kWh battery can jump from 10% to 80% in about 23 minutes at a 90 kW rate. The 52 kWh pack requires roughly 24 minutes to reach the same state of charge, thanks to a higher peak charging capacity of 105 kW.

### Digital Interior and Retro Flair
Inside, the cockpit is dominated by a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.9-inch central infotainment touchscreen. In a nod to Volkswagen’s heritage, the digital display features a selectable skin inspired by the first-generation Golf. In this mode, the traditional tachometer is replaced by a power meter that visualizes energy consumption and recuperation in a classic aesthetic.

Standard and available features are generous for the segment. Depending on the trim level, the ID. Cross can be equipped with 18-inch wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, adaptive cruise control, and a 360-degree camera system. The “Style” trim adds premium touches like Matrix LED headlights, an integrated light bar with illuminated Volkswagen logos, 3D-effect taillights, and a heated steering wheel.

### Advanced Technology and Utility
Volkswagen is leaning heavily into driver assistance with the optional Connected Travel Assist, which utilizes swarm data to recognize red lights and manage vehicle speed within system limits. For urban maneuvers, Park Assist Pro allows the vehicle to park autonomously, a process that can even be controlled from outside the car via a smartphone.

For those prioritizing driving dynamics, the 155 kW model offers an optional DCC (Dynamic Chassis Control) adaptive suspension system, which constantly adjusts the dampers based on road conditions.

Practicality hasn’t been overlooked. The ID. Cross supports Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, providing up to 3.6 kW of power for external devices. Furthermore, the 52 kWh version is capable of towing up to 1,200 kg (2,645 lbs), with a vertical tongue weight capacity of 75 kg, making it one of the more capable small EVs for light lifestyle duties. Optional luxury upgrades include 12-way power-adjustable massage seats and a premium 425-watt Harman Kardon sound system featuring 10 speakers and a dedicated subwoofer.
