Manchester United are actively monitoring West Ham United forward Crysencio Summerville as they contemplate further reinforcements for their attacking frontline, according to a report from The Athletic.

The 20-time English champions have already undergone a significant midfield rebuild during the current transfer window. However, senior club figures are now turning their attention to the flanks, with exploratory talks already taking place between United and the East London club. Any formal bid for the Dutch winger is understood to be heavily dependent on the future of Marcus Rashford.

Rashford’s future remains unresolved after Barcelona opted against making his temporary stay permanent. While Manchester United manager Michael Carrick is prepared to reintegrate the England international into his first-team training sessions, the winger could still depart Old Trafford before the transfer window closes.

Should Rashford secure a move away, Crysencio Summerville has emerged as the primary target to fill the void on the left wing. The 24-year-old is currently in the prime of his career, possessing the tactical versatility and physical attributes highly valued in modern transition-heavy systems. Primarily a right-footed left-winger who excels at cutting inside, he is equally comfortable operating on the right flank. His profile is characterized by explosive pace, technical proficiency in tight spaces, and a high defensive work rate when out of possession.

Summerville first rose to prominence during a sensational 2023/24 campaign with Leeds United in the Championship, where he registered 30 goal contributions across all competitions. That stellar form prompted West Ham to secure his services. However, his debut season at the London Stadium was heavily disrupted by persistent fitness problems.

Despite those physical setbacks, and West Ham’s overall struggles which ultimately resulted in relegation from the Premier League, Summerville still managed to showcase his individual quality. He recorded 10 goal contributions across all competitions, catching the eye of Netherlands national team manager Ronald Koeman.

Koeman subsequently named the winger in his squad for the World Cup. Summerville vindicated that selection by delivering four goal contributions in four matches, though his efforts were not enough to prevent the Dutch side from exiting the tournament in the round of 32.

With West Ham now preparing for life in the second tier, they are reluctant to let their prized asset leave cheaply. Summerville signed a long-term contract with the Hammers that runs until 2029, allowing the club to demand a premium fee of around £50 million despite their relegation.

For Manchester United, the acquisition of a specialist winger is a clear tactical priority. During the previous campaign, Michael Carrick found his options severely limited on the left flank, with Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha operating as the squad’s only recognized specialist in that position. To alleviate the burden on Cunha, Carrick frequently deployed young fullback Patrick Dorgu in an advanced, supportive role.

Whether Manchester United will formalize their interest with a concrete bid for Summerville during the final weeks of the offseason remains to be seen, but the Dutch forward represents a highly attractive option for a club looking to restore its domestic and European pedigree.
