MADRID — Atletico Madrid has firmly shut the door on Barcelona’s high-profile pursuit of star forward Julián Alvarez, with club chief executive Miguel Ángel Gil Marín declaring that the Argentine international is not for sale at any price, even if offers reach €200 million.

The definitive stance from the Madrid club comes amid intense speculation linking the 26-year-old striker with a summer move to Catalonia. Barcelona president Joan Laporta had previously confirmed that an offer was made, warning that the proposal would not remain on the table indefinitely. Barcelona is actively searching for a long-term successor to the departed Robert Lewandowski, who served as the club’s primary number nine before his departure.

However, Atletico has responded with an uncompromising message. In a video statement broadcast on the social media platform X, Gil Marín addressed the situation directly, making it clear that the club has no intention of negotiating.

“My will is clear, that of the club too, we have expressed it to the player, the agent, and the president of Barça: Atlético is the right place for Julián and he is the perfect striker for Atlético,” Gil Marín said. “We continue to count on him. I recently heard some statements from the president of Barça saying that the offer he had made to Atlético de Madrid was not infinite and the only possible answer is that our answer is infinite and that is that we do not want to transfer him. We will not accept an offer of 100, 150, or 200m euros.”

The development represents a significant setback for Barcelona, which has conducted a highly public pursuit of the forward. Alvarez, who has also attracted interest from Premier League side Arsenal, had previously given encouragement to his suitors. Speaking during the tournament, the striker remarked, “The best thing is a transfer. I want to fulfill my dream.”

How the player handles Atletico’s firm refusal to sell will be crucial to the unfolding transfer saga. Currently, Alvarez is preparing to represent Argentina, where he is scheduled to start in Sunday’s World Cup final against Spain. Atletico expects the forward to complete his international duties, take a period of rest, and return to Madrid fit and motivated for the upcoming season. Conversely, Barcelona remains hopeful that the striker will actively push for a move to the Nou Camp.

Alvarez moved to the Metropolitano in August 2024, joining from Manchester City in a transfer worth approximately £82 million. Having played a supporting role behind Erling Haaland in Manchester, the move to Spain allowed Alvarez to establish himself as a premier attacking force under the guidance of manager Diego Simeone.

His impact in Madrid was immediate. Alvarez scored 29 goals in his debut season and followed that up with 20 goals in his second year. His performances helped Simeone’s side secure a fourth-place finish in La Liga and reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League, a continental run that included eliminating Barcelona along the way. With his contract running until 2030, Atletico remains in a strong position to retain his services.
