Carlos Sainz Delays Williams Future Decision to Focus on Technical Recovery

Carlos Sainz has announced a pause in negotiations regarding his long-term future with Williams Racing, opting to focus entirely on the team’s immediate performance struggles until the Formula 1 summer break. The Spanish driver, who joined the Grove-based outfit on a flexible 2+2 contract, admitted that the implementation of a new regulation has exposed significant limitations within the team’s structure.

Sainz has instructed his representative, Carlos Oñoro, and his management team to isolate him from contract discussions to prevent distractions. The driver stated that the current situation at Williams demands his full energy, involving intensive simulator sessions and technical meetings to address the car’s lack of pace.

“Sincerely, I am not thinking about it because I have a lot of work to do here at Williams,” Sainz said. “I have even asked my team to leave me alone until the summer break to try to help Williams and improve the situation as much as possible.”

### Technical Limitations and Expectations

While Sainz initially viewed the project as a path toward winning races by 2028, the current performance gap has tempered those expectations. The team had hoped to maintain its position from the previous year or close the gap to the frontrunners using its allocated wind tunnel hours. Instead, the gap to the leading teams has increased.

Team principal James Vowles had previously expressed optimism regarding the team’s trajectory, but Sainz noted that the root of the issues lies deeper than financial resources. According to Sainz, the team has the necessary budget and backing from the board, but it struggles with internal efficiency and methods of work.

“We believe we have already identified where things started to go wrong,” Sainz explained. “The question now is what we do from here, how long those changes will take to yield results, and how aggressive we are going to be in the recovery.”
