Declan Rice Sickness Leaves England Facing Midfield Selection Dilemma Ahead of Argentina Semifinal
Thomas Tuchel faces selection headache as sickness and injuries deplete midfield options ahead of historic semifinal clash in Atlanta.

England midfielder Declan Rice is facing a fitness race ahead of the World Cup semifinal against Argentina in Atlanta, following a sickness bug that forced his early substitution in the quarter-final.
The Arsenal midfielder was replaced at half-time during England’s 2-1 extra-time victory over Norway in the Miami heat. According to a Monday report by BBC Sport, Declan Rice has still not fully recovered from the illness. Consequently, England manager Thomas Tuchel and his coaching staff will make a late decision regarding whether the midfielder will start the upcoming semifinal match.
Despite the lingering illness, there is optimism within the camp that Rice will be able to feature against the defending world champions. This fixture marks the first time England and Argentina have faced each other since a friendly match in 2005.
Midfield Selection Challenges
The potential absence of Rice presents a significant selection dilemma for Thomas Tuchel, given the limited depth in England’s midfield options. The partnership between Rice and Elliot Anderson has been a central component of England’s tournament run.
During the quarter-final against Norway, Chelsea captain Reece James was introduced as a half-time substitute for Rice, utilizing his versatility to play in the midfield engine room. However, James had missed the previous three matches due to a hamstring injury and has struggled to find his pace during his tournament appearances.
England’s options are further depleted by the absence of Jordan Henderson. The midfielder is sidelined with a freak wrist injury sustained during the celebrations of England’s last-16 victory over Mexico at Estadio Azteca.
This leaves Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo as the only other natural central midfield option available to Tuchel. Mainoo experienced a successful 2025-26 club season at Old Trafford under the management of Michael Carrick, but he has yet to play a single minute in this World Cup campaign.
Additionally, defensive options are strained. Right-back Ezri Konsa, who started against Norway, is currently nursing a hamstring issue of his own. If Rice is ruled out, James could be selected to start in midfield alongside his Chelsea club teammate, Argentina’s Enzo Fernandez, though such a selection carries physical risks given James’ recent injury layoff. Rice himself has also been playing through a hamstring injury during the tournament.
Historical Context
The semifinal clash in Atlanta renews one of international football’s most famous rivalries. England and Argentina have a storied history in the World Cup, highlighted by iconic encounters such as the 1966 quarter-final, the 1986 quarter-final in Mexico, and the 1998 round-of-16 match in France.
The Estadio Azteca, where Jordan Henderson suffered his injury during the round-of-16 celebrations, is historically significant as the venue of the 1970 and 1986 World Cup finals. It was the stage for the famous 1986 match between England and Argentina.
England is seeking to reach its first World Cup final since 1966, the year they won their sole world title on home soil at Wembley Stadium.
