Chelsea have reportedly initiated fresh discussions to secure the signature of Bologna forward Jonathan Rowe, according to Italian publication Il Resto del Carlino. The move comes as the West London club evaluates its attacking options following a challenging season for its current wingers.

The Blues invested heavily in their flanks last summer, acquiring Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United and Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund. However, the anticipated impact of these signings has yet to fully materialize. Garnacho recorded a difficult campaign, scoring twice in 33 appearances across the Premier League and Champions League. Meanwhile, Gittens was hampered by fitness issues, managing only five starts in domestic league play.

Renewed Interest in Rowe

Reports indicate that Chelsea identified Jonathan Rowe as a primary target toward the end of the previous campaign, holding initial talks to understand the parameters of a potential transfer. Within the last 48 hours, the club has reportedly made fresh contact with the player’s representatives to advance the operation.

Chelsea is not alone in its pursuit of the 23-year-old. Aston Villa, Galatasaray, and Fenerbahce have also enquired about the forward. Despite the interest, Bologna remains hesitant to sell. The player is currently under contract until 2029, and the Italian side reportedly intends to keep him unless they receive an “unrefusable proposal” or the player formally requests a departure.

Jonathan Rowe, who joined Bologna from Olympique de Marseille, is currently valued at approximately £24m by Transfermarkt. During his last term in Italy, he contributed 12 goals across all competitions. While primarily a left-winger, he has demonstrated the versatility to operate on the opposite flank.

Squad Restructuring Under Xabi Alonso

The pursuit of Rowe appears linked to a broader restructuring of the squad. With Chelsea reportedly open to cashing-in on Alejandro Garnacho this summer, Xabi Alonso is seeking a replacement to bolster the frontline. In addition to Rowe, the club is monitoring other targets, including Crysencio Summerville, Yan Diomande, and Francisco Trincao.

Rowe is described as a technically gifted attacker capable of dribbling in confined spaces and creating chances for teammates. While noted for his high potential and pace, scouts have also observed occasional inconsistency in his performances.

Bologna Football Club 1909 is a professional Italian football club based in Bologna, Emilia-Romagna. The club competes in Serie A, the top tier of the Italian football league system. Historically, Bologna has been a significant force in Italian football, having won the league title seven times. Technical Profile: The Modern Winger

In modern tactical systems, wingers like Rowe are often valued for their “inverted” capabilities—playing on the side opposite their strongest foot to allow for interior runs and shooting opportunities. The valuation of £24m cited by Transfermarkt reflects a growing market for young, versatile attackers who have proven their ability to contribute to double-digit goal tallies in major European leagues like Serie A.
