Arsenal Target Free Agent John Stones as William Saliba Injury Forces Transfer Move

Arsenal have entered the race to sign free agent defender John Stones as they seek immediate backline cover following a major injury blow to key centre-back William Saliba ahead of the new season.

Saliba sustained an injury during the World Cup and has chosen not to undergo a surgical procedure, according to French publication L’Equipe. While a precise recovery timeline remains unconfirmed, the French international is expected to spend several months recovering, leaving manager Mikel Arteta short of defensive options just four weeks before Arsenal launch their Premier League campaign against Coventry City.

The setback has accelerated Arsenal’s plans in the transfer market, where Stones has emerged as a primary target following his departure from Manchester City at the conclusion of last season, as reported by TEAMtalk. Arsenal currently hold a distinct advantage over London rivals Chelsea, who are also actively pursuing the 32-year-old England international.

A central factor favoring the Gunners is Arteta’s personal connection with Stones, established during his tenure as assistant manager at Manchester City. Furthermore, Arsenal can offer UEFA Champions League football, a competitive incentive Chelsea cannot match after failing to qualify for any continental competition this season.

Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso remains keen on adding veteran leadership to his squad, viewing the decorated defender as an attractive free-agent addition following his impressive performances for England at the World Cup.

Stones brings a decorated resume to any prospective club, having secured six Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy during his time at Manchester City, alongside years of top-flight experience beginning with his early career at Everton. Known for his aerial presence and composure when building play from the back, his skill set aligns closely with the modern tactical demands placed on central defenders.

If Arsenal successfully secure the veteran on a free transfer, Arteta will evaluate whether to immediately partner Stones with Gabriel Magalhaes in the center of defence, or integrate other options under consideration, such as Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapie, while awaiting Saliba’s return to fitness.
