Longman also stated there is no information indicating a wider threat to the public. He added that the police have received more than 120 reports from members of the public over the last few days.
### Background and Context
Ann Widdecombe was a highly visible figure in British public life for decades. She served as the Conservative Member of Parliament for Maidstone from 1987 until her retirement from the House of Commons in 2010. During her parliamentary career, she held several high-profile roles, including Minister of State for Prisons under Prime Minister John Major and Shadow Home Secretary under William Hague.
Widdecombe was known for her robust, socially conservative views and strong rhetorical style. After leaving Westminster, she remained in the public eye through television appearances and newspaper columns. She returned to active politics in 2019, representing the Brexit Party as a Member of the European Parliament until the United Kingdom’s formal departure from the European Union in 2020.
The geography of the investigation spans a significant distance. The Haytor area, where Widdecombe resided, is located within Dartmoor National Park in the southwestern county of Devon. The arrest took place in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, a town in the north of England situated approximately 250 miles away from the crime scene.
