While Hjulmand’s contract in Lisbon included an €80m release clause, Atlético successfully negotiated a 50 percent reduction, securing the player for a base fee of €40m plus performance-related add-ons.
Simeone’s pursuit of Hjulmand underscores a specific requirement for a dedicated “pivot” capable of screening the back four.
