Virgo Transport 8 Vanishes From Java Sea Tracking Systems
Search vessels comb the Java Sea after passenger ship loses contact

JAKARTA, Indonesia — The Virgo Transport 8 was navigating one of Indonesia’s primary domestic sea corridors when it abruptly stopped transmitting location data and lost radio contact with coastal monitoring stations, according to the Banjarmasin Search and Rescue Office. The inter-island passenger ship was carrying 240 people on a voyage to the island of Borneo.
The vessel had departed from Surabaya, East Java, the country’s second-most populous city and a major maritime hub. Its route across the Java Sea to southern Borneo typically spans several hundred nautical miles and serves as a critical transit link for passengers and cargo moving between Java and Kalimantan.
After reports that the ship had failed to maintain scheduled check-ins, regional search-and-rescue teams began emergency operations along its projected navigational path. Rescue coordinators said the last known position was roughly 92 miles from Banjarmasin, the provincial capital of South Kalimantan.

Maritime rescue authorities deployed patrol vessels across the Java Sea on Sunday. Search vessels continue to comb the waters between East Java and South Kalimantan, while emergency dispatchers have alerted commercial and fishing vessels operating in the central Java Sea to report any sightings.
There were no confirmed casualties, distress signals, or visible signs of wreckage in the immediate hours after the vessel disappeared from tracking systems. Authorities had not determined whether the silence resulted from a catastrophic electrical failure, severe weather, or an onboard mechanical breakdown.
Marine transport is fundamental to Indonesia, an archipelagic nation comprising more than 17,000 islands stretching over 3,000 miles along the equator. Millions of residents rely daily on passenger ships and motorized ferries to travel between major population centers on Java and outlying provinces, particularly in places where air travel is limited or cost-prohibitive.
