Volkswagen Multivan eHybrid Pushes Electric Range to 56 Miles

The T7-generation Multivan is built on Volkswagen Group’s modular transverse matrix (MQB) architecture rather than the heavy-duty commercial van foundations used by earlier T5 and T6 generations, which shared their structure with the Transporter commercial line. The passenger-car platform enabled engineers to integrate high-voltage electrified drivetrains, lower the center of gravity, and add advanced vehicle acoustics and electronics previously reserved for conventional sedans and crossover utility vehicles.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has equipped the modernized Multivan eHybrid with a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine, an electric motor, and a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Total system output reaches 245 brake horsepower (bhp), while the front-wheel-drive passenger van accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 8.9 seconds.

The base “Life” specification uses a standardized digital dashboard, with a 10.25-inch “Digital Cockpit” configurable instrument cluster positioned ahead of the driver. A centrally mounted 10.0-inch touchscreen infotainment interface provides wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration.

Energy for the electric motor is stored in a 19.7-kilowatt-hour (kWh) lithium-ion battery pack. Under the standardized Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP), the setup delivers up to 56 miles of zero-tailpipe-emission driving on a single charge.

The cabin’s internal modular rail system allows individual rear seats to be repositioned, folded, or removed entirely. This replaces the fixed multi-passenger bench seats found in traditional utility transport vans, while the vehicle’s MQB basis also supports the electrified drivetrain used by the updated model.

Across the entry-level trim, standard active safety and exterior equipment includes adaptive cruise control, a rear-view parking camera, automated driver-assistance features, full LED headlamps, 18-inch alloy wheels, and dual sliding side passenger doors for access to the rear seating compartments.

With routine battery charging, the Multivan eHybrid is rated to achieve fuel economy figures exceeding 100 mpg when operating in combined hybrid mode. The model operates alongside the all-electric ID.
