Telehealth Startup Modern Thyroid Clinic Hits Eight-Figure Scale Addressing Gaps in Women’s Health

Self-funded Texas clinic scales to 48 states with specialized direct-to-consumer thyroid care model.

A self-funded telehealth platform focused on specialized endocrine care is projecting lower-to-mid eight-figure revenues this year, highlighting a growing demand for alternative approaches to female thyroid treatment. Founded in Bee Cave, Texas, by physician assistant McCall McPherson, Modern Thyroid Clinic has expanded into 48 states and built a workforce of nearly 40 employees without raising venture capital or investing in marketing until recently.

The company’s rapid growth intersects with broader shifts in direct-to-consumer digital health, where specialized clinics target chronic conditions that patients feel are underdiagnosed or inadequately managed in primary care settings.

According to the American Thyroid Association, an estimated 20 million Americans live with some form of thyroid disease. Women are disproportionately affected, being five to eight times more likely than men to develop a disorder, with roughly one in eight women affected during her lifetime. Up to 60% of cases remain undiagnosed under standard screening protocols—a figure McPherson estimates could be as high as 80% to 90% in practice.

Conventional thyroid treatment typically relies on measuring Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) levels and prescribing levothyroxine, a synthetic version of the inactive T4 hormone. In a healthy endocrine system, the body converts T4 into active T3 hormone. However, physiological or genetic factors can impair this conversion, leaving some patients with persistent symptoms such as chronic fatigue, weight gain, cognitive dysfunction, and depression despite normal blood test results.

McCall McPherson’s clinical model stemmed from her personal experience navigating the healthcare system. While working as a physician assistant, she suffered severe, debilitating exhaustion and related symptoms, only to be told by her physician that her single lab panel appeared normal. After eventually securing treatment from an integrative specialist who evaluated broader lab metrics and prescribed active T3 hormone, her recovery prompted her to re-examine thyroid diagnostics within her existing psychiatry practice.

Finding that many patients referred for treatment-resistant depression actually suffered from unrecognized thyroid dysfunction, McPherson pivoted her clinical focus. She initially operated as a solo practitioner handling administrative and clinical duties simultaneously before establishing Modern Thyroid Clinic.

The clinic’s clinical protocol involves running expanded lab panels, managing autoimmune drivers like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, and utilizing active T3 hormone therapies alongside traditional T4 hormone. Modern Thyroid Clinic maintains a distinct hiring practice, employing exclusively female clinicians who have personally been diagnosed with thyroid conditions, aiming to address the high rate of clinical dismissal reported by female patients.

The practice’s growth earned it spots on the Inc. 5000 list in 2025 and 2026, alongside McPherson’s inclusion on Inc.’s Female Founders 500 list in 2025. Her clinical approach will be detailed in an upcoming book, Take Back Your Thyroid, set for publication by Penguin Random House in February 2027.
