Brazil’s Cross-Border Crypto Flows Outpace Traditional Capital Since 2017, IMF Reports

IMF data shows stablecoin expansion in Brazil driving faster cross-border digital flows than traditional channels.

Cross-border crypto flows in Brazil have expanded at a faster pace than traditional capital flows since 2017, propelled by rapid growth across the country’s stablecoin market, according to research from the International Monetary Fund.

The shift highlights how digital tokens pegged to foreign currencies are becoming a primary mechanism for international settlements and capital preservation in Latin America. Businesses and retail participants have increasingly adopted these tokens as a substitute for standard banking channels to reduce transaction costs and mitigate currency volatility.

Data monitored by the International Monetary Fund indicates that the velocity of digital asset movements now presents new considerations for global capital flow tracking. In response to the surging volume, Banco Central do Brasil has established clear regulatory frameworks to oversee virtual asset service providers and incorporate digital transactions into official financial surveillance.

This institutionalization has allowed Brazil to lead regional adoption, positioning crypto infrastructure as a parallel conduit for trade and cross-border payments alongside conventional financial networks.
